Claws was smaller than both her brothers, but what she lacked in stature, she made up for in sheer stubbornness. Using the alular claws on her wings, she pushed and shoved at Tumble and Spider, giving them little nips for good measure until they made more space for her in front of Rooster.
"Hey, you mind your manners," Rooster said, tapping her on the nose. "I've got enough attention to spare for all three of you."
Claws shook her head at the light tap, but, completely unrepentant, proceeded to shove her head against Rooster's chest, trilling softly.
"Hey, now, you're all grown up, out here with the other dragons," Rooster said, patting her neck.

After dinner, Rooster was shooed away from the kitchen where he was trying to help with the washing up ("If you set back recovery on that shoulder, both Minerva and Marion will have my hide," Albert exclaimed as he swatted at Rooster with a dish cloth. "Out!"), and promptly vanished. Junior later found him sitting out on the porch, gazing out at the darkened farm.
"Was worried you'd gone up to the downed tree for a moment there," Junior said, taking a seat on the porch bench next to Rooster.

"I didn't realize you and David didn't get a full rundown of everything that's around when the station is moved."
"We get the stuff that's super close," Lily said with a shrug. "Things that might have a direct impact on day-to-day operations, but anything beyond that is really only needed for off-sites. Honestly, they're usually more worried about what you lot get up to in the labs than outside threats."
"I'd be insulted if I hadn't seen the list of features Cammy and Telvar wanted to build into our probe," Mags said. "Nothing in our brief required it to have a laser that powerful. Nothing."

"Ms. Bowen, wait up!"
Mags turned at the voice behind her, stopping and waiting as Cammy jogged down the hallway towards her, arms practically overflowing with a large, lumpy bundle.
"Just call me Mags," Mags said as Cammy fell into step beside her.

Junior buried his face in Rooster's hair, feeling sick at the thought of how much anguish he'd inadvertently put his friend through.
"In the barn, I was panicking," Junior forced himself to admit. "I didn't know what to do, and everyone was looking at me to make a decision, and I just β¦ I needed it all to stop."

Back in Cinnabar, dragons were justβat best they were tools, you know? And with my dad's fintail, mostly they were just scary. Seeing you with Floyd, that was the first time I ever saw someone interacting with a dragon just because they wanted to, not because they needed to in order to get something done. I couldn't figure out why you did it for so long."

Looking around, he could see David and Lily already stirring, and possibly Cammy as well, while Keri and Mags were still soundly asleep and Keith wasn't even visible beneath the blanket he'd wrapped himself in. Extracting himself from his own nest of bedding, Telvar tiptoed over to the kitchen and let himself inside. As Keith had said, they had the fixings for coffee, so Telvar started laying everything out. While the water heated, he searched the cupboards for something that would make a passable breakfast, but it really was mostly beans. Apparently nobody in Russell's pod had been very fond of cooking.
His hand brushed a familiar looking travel mug tucked on one of the shelves and Telvar froze, fighting back a sudden rush of grief.

The young dragon twisted through the air, the sheen on her blindingly white scales flashing golden in the sunbeams shining through the trees as she ducked and wove through the obstacle course. Her rider's mouth was set in a determined frown as he clutched the reins tight, urging her upward with pressure from his knees and a quick tap of his heels. The dragon gleefully broke through the pine branches and burst into the air above the trees, braying her triumph as she saw the forest spread out below her.

So, @tamsinswriting asked about dragon breeds on one of my WIP Wednesday sentence posts, and I was gonna just leave it at a reply, but, uh, apparently I have a lot to say about my dragons, so this turned into a full post of it's own.
Short version, I have greater and lesser wedgetails, cloud reapers, alabaster crests, banded jumpers, and fintail drakes, along with an unnamed species that is going by the placeholder [draco] in the draft.
Details and a few sketches under the cut.
I've been thinking of the different dragon types as breeds, like dogs or especially horses, since they take the place of horses in the world of Brookscale, but I've also been debating whether there should also be separate species with different breeds among the species, kinda like adding in donkeys. Haven't decided yet, but if I do go that way, it would probably be that there were a few wild species of dragons that were domesticated in different areas and had breeds created from there. For now, I'm saying they're all breeds of the same, original wild dragon species that was domesticated back in ancient history and most current wild dragons are actually, technically, feral dragons.
Lesser wedgetails are the first ones I designed, cuz Floyd was the first dragon added to the story (it's his and Junior's fault this story exists). They are medium to large dragons (bull moose to bull elephant-sized) with heavily armored heads and necks and a tail that widens towards the tip, which is where the name comes from. They tend to come in darker colors, lots of blacks, greys, and browns, but with brighter colors on the armor plating like red, orange, and purple. They're strong and calm, and tend to be used for draft animals, though smaller ones like Floyd are ridden too. They have good night vision, which makes them useful for people traveling as they can fly at night if need be. They are also very social and often nest together, raising their young as a group. It means they're good dragons to have in a herd because they will break up disagreements between other dragons to keep herd unity, even with other species.
These are some pics of Floyd showing kinda how I picture the armor scales on the head and neck, plus Junior for scale (who is about 6 ft tall). The 'wedge' on their tails is made of individual, but connecting barbules similar to a feather and makes them fairly maneuverable, especially for their large size.
Greater wedgetails are like the lesser ones, but bigger (elephant to beaked whale size) and there's probably a color difference, but I honestly haven't thought too much about it yet. They're also known for being calm and have good night vision like their lesser counterparts, but are almost exclusively draft animals rather than riding animals. While they are pretty social with their own breed, they're not as prone to peacekeeping with other dragons the way lesser wedgetails are. They won't get into fights, but won't stop other non-wedgetail dragons from getting into fights either.
Cloud reapers are very large dragons (beaked whale size at the smallest and somewhere around blue whale size for the very largest) and usually have one main color, often very dark like black or midnight blue, with a brighter, secondary color for markings on the face, legs, and occasionally bodies. They're used as draft animals or as riding animals for distance travel, as they have good stamina, and full grown ones are unlikely to be attached by predators. They do well in herds, but prefer to nest separately, rather than communally like the wedgetails.
This is a pic of Blaze, Mr. Brookscale's dragon with a rough person for scale. Blaze, despite what my notes in the pic say, isn't gigantic for a cloud reaper, but he's not tiny either. A lot of the cloud reaper length is in the tail, and they have a double row of horns that shorten into spikes and then raised nubs as they progress down the neck to the body, merging into a single line where the tail starts.
Alabaster crests are large dragons, but max out around humpback whale size, rather than blue whale like the cloud reapers, and most don't even get quite that big. They are two-legged dragons. However, their wings have claws on the wrist joint, enabling them to walk on all fours (if I go for multiple species as well as multiple breeds, the alabaster crests will be a separate species from wedgetails, reapers, and other four-legged dragons). They are usually entirely white with a reflective sheen to the scales in various colors, best seen in sunlight.
This is the concept I'm working on for the alabaster crests. I want to do something more with the tail, but haven't figured out exactly what yet. They aren't as social as wedgetails or reapers, and do better with smaller herds, otherwise they get into squabbles over herd hierarchy, but can be housed with other dragons without fuss. The name comes from a thick ridge that runs down the center of their heads from nose to partway down the neck, larger/higher in males than females (picture would be a female).
Banded jumpers are medium-sized dragons and are two-legged like the alabaster crests. Their name comes from the banding on their tail (think raccoon or ring-tailed lemur, but slightly less regular, with some bands wider and closer together or narrower and farther apart). Haven't decided the full range of possible colors for their scales, but their eggs are a pale lavender with brown speckles, and young dragons have freckles that they grow out of as they age. This usually happens around the time they fully fledge, but you'll sometimes have newly flighted dragons that still keep their freckles for a month or two, even close to a full year after fledging. They prefer to bury their eggs and don't always co-nest like wedgetails. However, first-time mothers will usually be mentored by an older female if one in the herd is nesting the same year.
Fintail drakes are a medium to large species, but other than that, I don't have many specific. They're supposed to be a breed that isn't really common in the Meadowglen area, where the story is taking place, and the only plot relevant one I have currently is in Rooster's childhood memories, which he tries not to think about, so I haven't had to make up a lot of the details yet. Wait, no, I lied. There was one that rampaged, but it was a wild one, so still not a lot of details. They're a draft breed, but have been used as guard animals too, which is unusual for dragons. I'm thinking of having their name be from a vertical fin on their tails.
[Dracos] are small to medium dragons, probably pony and horse sized. They have sharp claws and are very quick. They're another species I haven't put as much detail into yet, but I'd imagine they're a racing breed or used for travel, probably for messengers or other people who need to move short distances quickly. I should reread my notes more carefully before typing things. They are apparently a hunting breed (though I think I'll keep the racing/messenger thing too). They have a natural affinity for teamwork and make good pack hunters in pairs or groups of three, which is often how they're kept by either smaller farms or people in rural towns. They come in bright colors with lots of patterns, usually tri-colored at minimum and often more than that.
Also, I was going through my sketchbook to get pictures and found these guys.
Apparently, I also have a breed called wavebacks who hadn't made it onto the reference doc yet. They look too big and sturdy to me to work as how I was envisioning [dracos], so I'll keep them as their own thing. Very spiky and named for the shape of the spines that run from their nose to almost the end of their tails. Single row of backwards curling spines on head and neck splitting to a double row down the back and tail, with room to sit between, though you'll want a properly fitted saddle to prevent abrasions. The tail has a spade-shaped tip. I'm thinking they're riding animals, possibly more for ground travel than flight.
I have a reference doc going to help me keep all my dragon facts straight as I make them up, and thanks to writing this I got to update it, so thank you for the question!

Junior tried the strong smelling jerky he kept in his pocket as dragon treats first, tossing a large handful in front of the dragon in hope that the smell might distract it, snap it out of whatever had induced its rage. The dragon skidded to a stop, snarling and snuffling at the jerky before smacking it aside with a harsh swipe of its claws. It reared back again, head turning at the sight of movement out of the corner of its eyes, and Junior hastily waved his arms again, keeping the dragon's attention on himself and away from Rooster and the escaping townsfolk.

To Rooster, it felt like when he'd first come to live at Brookscale Farm. Back then, he'd been so worried about making sure the Brookscales found him useful, so convinced that they would throw him out at the first sign of trouble, that he'd watched their every move for signs of anger, frustration, or disgust, just waiting for an indication that he was doing something wrong. Now, well, it wasn't that he thought Junior was going to reject him, not after last night, but it was the same sort of hyper-awareness that Rooster remembered from that time, as if every little move Junior made was heavy with significance, if only Rooster could just watch closely enough.
It was when Rooster went to hand Junior a steaming plate only to find Junior already right beside him, making them both jump for at least the third time in as many minutes that Rooster finally let out a burst of nervous laughter.
"If we keep this up, we're not gonna be able to fly home," he said. "And I can personally not recommend climbing down from here. How are we this bad at this? We've known each other for ages!"
"I don't know," Junior said, taking the plate from Rooster and setting it off to the side. "Albert and Marion weren't like this, were they?"
"No, they just kept staring at each other all besotted while you rolled your eyes a bunch."
"Is that what we are, besotted?"
Rooster looked up sharply at the slightly desperate edge to Junior's tone.
"Hey, hey, you okay? I thought I was supposed to be the one who panics about things," Rooster said, scooting over beside Junior and taking his hand. "You're the calm one."
