A Few Days Home

Seridyn was a little scruffier than usual, his hair just a little longer, as he walked down the street towards his house, a large heavy rucksack on his back. He’d been gone a month, and though Elle had received about a letter or two a week, she knew that he was busy by the ever-shortening of his letters. No matter how short, however, he told her that he loved her, that he missed her so much he couldn’t breathe, and that he’d come home to visit as soon as he could.
He hadn’t gotten to write to her and tell her when he’d be home, so these next few days were a complete surprise... which was why he was on foot for the last mile or so. He didn’t want the sound of hoofbeats on the ground to let her know he was there. He didn’t want to ruin it. He smiled when he saw the house and his pace picked up, his eyes taking in the place he knew his soul rested. The people he knew carried it, and namely? His wife. His heart skipped at just the thought of seeing her again, emotions already gripping at his chest and stomach. He was home.
Walking up the front yard, he saw Aelwynn sitting on the porch, looking forlorn and Seridyn took a few steps closer, shrugging out of that sack and gently lowering it to the ground wordlessly before quietly sneaking up towards her and then leaning down when he was close by “What’s wrong little girl? No one loove you?” he teased, giving her a grin.
