wrt serenoa's family, i think destra is a major factor in this reading, at least narratively... there's the unspoken implication that because serenoa looks nothing like regna, that she must look almost exactly like her mother. and then benedict is constantly comparing the two of them both in liberty route and his duel in morality route. ("All I wanted, more than anything, was Lady Destra's good favor... To hear her tell me I'd done well..." "You've done well, Benedict." <- can anyone hear me. i feel fucking insane)
there's also a lot there wrt destra's lack of autonomy and how it compares to serenoa's lack of autonomy (and if i had the capacity to make this answer a mile long, how this compares to frederica and orlaea's lack of autonomy. this game makes me crazy over mothers and daughters it seems). destra's entire life after her encounter with king regna was completely taken out of her control. after that night, she lived and died according to the whims of regna, house wolffort (particularly symon, but idt benedict is entirely free of fault), and the royalists. she was a political pawn, at most.
...which is quite the interesting parallel to serenoa, when you consider her relationship to the scales of conviction! every major political "decision" made by serenoa is neither her idea nor her choice (excluding golden route of course). it makes me wonder if when symon passed the scales of conviction down to her, he (intentionally or unintentionally) passed down the idea that serenoa, much like the scales, much like destra, is nothing more than a means to an end, subject to the whims of others. he certainly wasn't afraid to tell her and frederica that they were merely political pawns wrt their marriage. i wonder if that lingers in her mind.
