my controversial take is that baelor absolutely would’ve forgiven maekar had he survived his tourney injuries BUT if aerion had died during his fight with dunk, maekar would’ve never forgiven baelor for not siding with the rest of the family

-------------
"You are a good man, Ser Duncan." His voice was low. "A rare kind." A pause, full and relaxed, the space of a breath held and released. "The kind I find I cannot do without."
Duncan stayed where he was, shoulder warm beneath Baelor's hand, the fire at his back, and the cold beneath his knee. He felt something in his chest open quietly and completely, like a door that had been shut for a long time had finally been permitted to move.
Itsy bitsy headcanon of mine
Dunk has one silver stag he refuses to spend.
It’s faces smoothed flat from constant rubbing, the rampant stag and the crowned visage of Aegon IV polished to a near mirror shine.
It’s his most secret good luck charm, he sews it into the hem of his tunic before a joust so he doesn’t ride alone.
Egg asks about it once, when they’re sleeping in a ditch and gnawing on salted fish. Wondering why not spend it for a hot meal and bath. Dunk says it’s a promise.
A promise that there’s a dawn at the end of every night. A vow to remember, that no matter how far he goes he’ll still be that boy in Flea Bottom seeing a silver for the first time.
Then decades and decades later, he’s Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. He and Egg are on a diplomatic visit to Braavos, he excuses himself for an hour from the Sealord’s palace.
Where he went Egg does not know but when he returns he is ten gold and one silver lighter than he was when he left.
He no longer is the scared too-large little boy clutching the body of his only friend, he isn’t Dunk of Flea Bottom anymore and hadn’t been for a long time. But he remembered Rafe’s eyes like it was just yesterday. He went and found a girl with her scared and wary eyes and payed her passage to a future she deserved and didn’t dare dream of.
And Rafe’s ghost which haunted him from the moment that knife slit her throat laughed her girlish, guttural laugh and kissed him on the cheek and faded away.
Five years later Ser Duncan the Tall would be dead. But the money he payed would eventually be used to purchase the crown of Queen Rhaella from the trembling hands of The Beggar King. The money he would use to save his sister’s life as she was on death’s doorstep with pneumonia.
