6. Sephora Kids Phenomenon
Tweens, the consumer group that’s outgrown the little kid stage but are not yet teenagers, are obsessed with skincare. Their curiosity for a
The "Sephora Kids" phenomenon happened a few months ago, possibly even last year, when younger kids started going and reining havoc in the stores. There were even incidences where people were painting "black face" but that is a whole other issue for another day. This problem to me stems from young girls seeing social media platforms and then having the impression that they need to do things like makeup to look "pretty enough" for boys or "feminine" enough. Makeup has been a way to express femininity for years, and now these young girls are getting the impression that they need it to be attractive and to appeal to men, in my eyes. It also reinforces how these gender expectations are being forced onto the younger generations. Gender expectations are imposed onto us from birth, and these are things like the clothes we wear, the activities we are in, and how we perform day-to-day interactions. So, if young girls are only seeing content where women/girls are putting on makeup, they are going to get the impression that that is the only way to be beautiful and attractive. This also creates early exposure to gender performance by wearing makeup, they are performing their gender the "right" way according to society's standards. This is something that I could talk about for ages but I am going to leave it at that.
