“Your heartbeat feels so nice.” The words were a mere whisper as they left her lips. She could see a smile teasing his as she looks up at him. Quiet nights like this, no intense intimacy, but simply whispering to each other and waiting for the other to fall asleep, were Alice’s favorite. His arms around her, a hand against her head, keeping her close.

Things had progressed between the two of them, as if her feelings toward him were like a group of boxes--One inside the other. When they had first met, it was that interest, but slight caution, knowing what he was. Then it had progressed to that kindness he now knew so well, trusting him with her life. That deepest layer, the closest to her, was the intense, unfading love she felt for him.

It was undoubtedly her best trait: The kindness and concern she held for others. Merely wishing to do her best to keep others safe, and happy. However, he realizes her kindness could go too far, and that she tries to do too much. She could very well get hurt by someone she tried to help, and he would be there in a heartbeat to destroy her attacker entirely.

“Try not to die before I do, Alice.” The words still rang clearly in her mind. That single sentence, that promise he would return, was where it began for the two of them, even if Dogma hadn’t yet realized it. And, he had indeed kept that promise to her.
