This past week we have celebrated Seniors Week with a new event everyday. Monday: The mayor of Red Deer (Tara Veer ) opened Seniors Week with a speech before lunch. The lunch was a free barbecue which was hamburger with potato salad. In many cultures food does bring people together and many participated. The event was sponsored by The Kiwanis club in Red Deer (http://www.reddeerkiwanis.org/history.html). Tuesday: An information fair was hosted at The Golden Circle for all Red Deer residents to come and find out what different organization offers. Most of the organizations are non-profit and is run by an abundance of dedicated volunteers. It was also an amazing opportunity for me to make connections with people and organizations that could be beneficial to my future work. Other 47 seniors went on a bus-trip to Calgary to watch a Buddy Holly show at the Jubilations Dinner Theatre. (http://calgary.jubilations.ca) Wednesday: the usual hot lunch was a roast-beef lunch which the senior had to book to be able to participate in. After lunch a bunch of the seniors including my supervisor and a board member provided fun entertainment. The fabulous G Cee’s air-band delivered an amazing a fun show. Thursday: In the morning at 11 am there was a “Seniors Walk” A group of seniors walked from The Golden Circle to an outdoor gym situated approx. 700 meters away. Here student from a Catholic school motivated and instructed the seniors on how to use the machines. In the afternoon it was “Strawberry Tea” with a signature dessert competition. A panel of judges was put together to evaluate and choose the best dessert. The winner of the competition was Deanne who had baked a “Pumpkin spice cake” and was awarded a prize. Friday: The last day of Senior’s Week close to 150 people participated in a Complimentary pancake  breakfast. Following the breakfast entertainment was delivered by Viggo Nielsen. This event was sponsored by Central Alberta Council on aging.
