I have to say, I was pretty much indifferent to the swap au before, but your comic has single-handedly sold me on it. You made it FAR more interesting than I gave it credit for, so thank you!
Thank you so much for the kind words! It also took me a bit to get invested in the swap au haha. Imma start yapping so be prepared!
I really love the original AU artwork and concept, but I always felt like there was something missing, like the Spamtenna dynamic was a bit unbalanced. Swap Spam seemed like he didn’t really care about Tenna, and I think that indifference was made worse by how much rougher Tenna has it in this au. The two just didn’t feel like equals to me.
So I wanted to take that inequality and turn it into a source of conflict. Since Spamton has the ‘physical’ upper hand, I thought Tenna had to have the ‘emotional’ one. It was important to me that Spamton cared A LOT, but was absolutely terrible at showing it. When writing him, I really wanted to tap into the idea that he’s someone who has all the money in the world but is still deeply unsatisfied with how his life turned out, and is desperate to have a real connection again.
I think I also see a lot of fan art where Swap!Spam is kinda… careless when handling Tenna? It’s all really cool art btw, but I was more interested in exploring what the consequences of Spamton being so rough might actually be. In this case, he ends up hurting the guy he cares about and accidentally drives him away.
I guess the beauty of AUs is that we all get to do our own spins on concepts we like!
