just spent like 20 minutes laying with my head on its side on a library desk so that my ear medication (for the ear infection that i probably gave myself by using earbuds too much) doesnt drip out of my ear. this is so stupid.
people tend to see creative pursuits and science as in opposition to each other but actually all that's happened to me since i started studying a science is that the science in my fantasy worldbuilding has significantly improved in accuracy
i understand why using a scanning electron microscope is completely impractical for most palynology but i gotta say the differential in the quality of images is HILARIOUS. it's like the difference between the textbook and the black and white scan of it you get on an exam. even at 1000x magnification most pollen grains just kinda look like roughly spherical or oval little blobs, maybe tetrads, with vaguely textured surfaces. and if you're lucky you can make out the colpi and pore positioning and the colpi and pore positioning is distinct enough to ID the grain, but in many cases you really can't make out fainter colpi or pores. OR like the fucking ERICACEAE family the colpi are similar between many species and it's even finer distinctions that you have to look for and at that point i put away the microscope and start crying.
think i'm gonna put together a new taglist as I've lost the old one somewhere in my files (i have like 8-9 years of accumulated nonsense on this baby (my computer) so finding anything that's more than 3 yrs old is a real challenge). Anyone interested in being tagged for semp art/writing?

I've just been writing a scene with a lot of descriptions of clothes and it got me thinking: what materials are clothes and shoes typically made out of in the lost cities?
Given that elves are all vegetarians, I have to assume that they aren't on board with clothing made with animal by-products of most kinds. So leather is probably out as a material for shoes, which leaves me wondering: are elven shoes actually like, plastic? Surely that goes against their environmentalist principles. Or have they got some sort of advanced synthetic replacement for leather that's also biodegradable?
Similarly for clothes, I have to imagine that elves would not like anything plastic/that sheds microplastics. But also silk is out (given silkworms) and wool/other fantasy equivalents might or might not be out as they still rely on animals. Do the elves exclusively use cotton, linen, and other plant-based fibers in their clothing? What do they use for warm clothing, then? Because you can't tell me that a linen cloak is going to keep you warm for shit.
