I think my exploration in the second half of the semester really started to flourish but did suffer whilst I was ill in Dec/Jan which was just as I started to really pick up pace and enjoy the things I was investigating. My exploration into the microscopic construction of fabric is something I am excited about and want to explore further. I want to take my own microscopic photos of particular fibres to push these ideas further into something I feel happy with. I love the experimentation of painting with colour and chalk but feel it needs more time to develop properly.
I am looking into my options for printmaking from home for my knit drawings to push these ideas further also. I am hoping to complete a series of drawings of different knit stitches. Unfortunately, again this is something I feel needs proper development and is still in the mid stages at this hand in.
The vase/cup paintings again are something I want to explore further and I love the influence they had on the microscopic drawings. I brought forward the dash marks (in my head represent stitching) and using a specific colour palette.
These ideas I want to continue to work on during the second semester, but I feel like my monoprints of rags and threads are pretty much resolved in my head. I am hoping to bind them into a book but I am happy with them being displayed on the wall in a series. I think these are the only “finalised” pieces of my work so far in the year which is disheartening as this is my final year. I really struggled academically on my dissertation and I never realised that this module started whilst the dissertation module was still going on. I found it incredibly difficult trying to manage both tasks and really let this module go for a while, which meant by the time I’d handed in the dissertation I was exhausted and out of any ideas. I found it hard to improve any of my ideas in Nov and felt they were all a bit rubbish, alongside managing the second lockdown in the covid crisis. I also have caring responsibilities for a vulnerable family member so I felt incredibly stressed which is why I think I was so critical of myself and my work.
I thoroughly enjoyed exploring Anni Albers work in my studio file, I just wish I had been able to visit her work in person. I have seen some things from an exhibition at the Tate Modern a few years ago but I can’t fully remember the experience. Again, I did struggle with the studio file as apart from Anni Albers, I couldn’t find many artists or things that I felt inspiration from. We’ve all been unable to walk around galleries and museums and I haven’t seen much in my online research that has really wowed me. My practice has definitely suffered for the lack of inspiration and the lack of seeing others’ work. I have background artists like Louise Bourgeois that continue to inspire me but I don't feel like I'm learning much by continuously looking into her work. I want further inspiration and feedback from my peers in the studio. I didn't realise how much I value my peers comments on my work.
Overall, I am pleased with the work I have started during the second half of the semester but I am disappointed with myself in my progress. I wish I had managed to develop a lot of these themes and ideas further but I have struggled this semester with a few things and then in Dec/Jan had some dental issues which will need to be resolved with surgery after the lockdown. I am already thinking about practical work I can do to accompany drawings and I’m feeling optimistic for the next few months.
