Simargl is a magical creature from Slavic mythology. Appearing as a winged dog or lion, he is revered as a deity by some - including grand Prince of Kiev Vladimir the Great - as a deity.
Simargl's wife is Kupalnitsa, the goddess of the night. He is the father of Kupalo, the mighty sun of the summer solstice, and the fertility goddess Kostroma.

Simargl or Semargl is a deity or mythical creature in East Slavic mythology, depicted as a winged lion or dog. He has unclear duties.
Most of scholars determinating him as mediator and messenger between human world and divine world (like his equivalent of Simurgh in Persian mythology).
An idol of Semargl was present in the pantheon of prince Vladimir The Great.

Simargl by Viktor Korolkov.
Simargl or Semargl (Russian: Симаргл or Семаргл) is a deity or a mythical creature in East Slavic mythology, depicted as a winged lion or dog. An idol of Semargl was present in the pantheon of Great Prince Vladimir I of Kiev. It may be the equivalent of Simurgh in Persian mythology, which is also represented as a griffin with a dog body.
There are two theories about why the Prince included Simargl in the pantheon:
1. Sarmatian-Alanian (Iranian) origin. a. Eastern Slavs borrowed Simargl from Sarmatian-Alanian people and worshiped him. b. Eastern Slavs never worshiped Simargl. Just at that time, a significant number of Kiev residents were of Khazar and Sarmatian-Alanian origin. Vladimir included their deity in the pantheon to get their support.
2. The name Simargl appeared as a result of a slip of the pen in The Primary Chronicle. Eastern Slavs never knew such a deity. Instead, in the pantheon was Semi-Yarila (Семи-Ярила) - the seven-headed idol of Yarila.
