Storytelling without a voice
I need to read more articles about psychology. I am starting to feel that by doing so I will become a better storyteller. After playing Journey, I noticed how easy it seemed to create a game without any narrator or even text telling the player what the story is about. Yet, I know that it isn't as easy as it looks.
Recently, I was made aware of the Self-Completion Theory. There were a few published studies about this theory. In summary, it is about the brain's need to complete tasks/ story based on what it feels is the ideal solution/ goal. Once that solution/ goal has been met by the brain, it stops thinking about that task. Otherwise, it will continue to fill in the blanks or try to solve the goal.
So my question is how can this be placed into one of my games without it seeming like it was forced?
Going back to Journey, I was amazed at how I put my own self into the story and from my experience in life tried to fill in the blanks. So how do I do this?
