Flag of the Principality of Seborga, a self-declared unrecognised micronation

The reason the micro state was established was because the town got sold in 1729 to Savoy, but in the Congress of Europe the sale was never mentioned. And thus the founder of the state claims that since the town hasn't been mentioned in that treaty that other transfers of the town don't apply. In a referendumin 1995 the people of Seborga voted 304-4 for a constitution and independence from Italy. The micro state is a monarch who is democratically elected, the current monarch is Nina Menegatto, who was elected in November of last year. The town has it's own currency, Seborga luigini, and a military composed of mostly volunteers
