At one point I was a big fan of The Harvard Business Review. And one article they wrote made a lifetime impression on me. I believe HBR interviewed well over 1,000 top executives, all successful by any standard measure when it comes to business success. And although these executives had many qualities, three stood out above all. 1) Self accountable. Taking responsibility and never passing the buck. 2) Transparent. Readily shares information. Teaches direct reports all the secrets of the trade, doesn't hold back, and equally values his team's success as he does his own success. 3) Trusting. Trust in others to perform their duties. Heavy handed, micro managers fared poorly. Executives who were viewed as inspiring, trusting, teaching, supportive and ultimately, trusted others to do their job, fared best in the executive, climb the corporate ladder, and try not to step on too many necks, world of executives. I think these traits apply to all successful people. And not just in the world of executives. Takes responsibility? Transparent? Trusting and trustworthy? Yes please. These are qualities we want in our business and personal relationships. Qualities worthy of aspiration for all.
