For now

It’s not love. It’s barely even sex, so it’s most definitely not love.

It’s about comfort, and touching another person, one who doesn’t fall to their knees in worship, or curse at her at first sight. It’s about feeling normal in a new reality that she can barely keep up.

‘You killed the Divine!’

‘Someone else killed the divine!’

‘We need to have you on trial!’

‘You should stay with the inquisition! We can offer you protection!’ That one was rich coming from the same person that mere hours (days?) before had their sword against her neck.

It’s about feeling in control.

When Segritt has his arms around her she feels normal. Just a mage having a thirst with someone in an enclosed hold. All under the watchful eye of the guards.

When she pulls his hair, and closes her legs around his waist, it’s all about control and release.

They’re not good together, they’re as temporary as an autumn leaves, but for now, now when they lay spend in his bed, now when he kisses her shoulder in affection, now when she seeks his mouth for a kiss before, once again, spending the night? For now this will do.

This is temporary, they both know it, and Segritt avoids her in every day life, unless she wants to buy something from his weapon stack. She doesn’t really blame him, she spends weeks in the Hinterlands fighting and trying to gather support for the Inquisition. They’re both aware that they might not survive, and emotional attachment would be a mistake right now. Sex though? Sex with him is fun, it’s messy, and just the kind of thing a woman needs to feel normal, after being spat on my her peers.

They’re temporary.

But for now? Now when he turns her body to his, now when his voice whispers in her ear the most dreadful pickup lines (‘hey Joy, you’re a mage, I’ve got another staff for you to wrap your hands around!’) and she laughs in genuine mirth? Yeah, this will do.

Later on Josephine takes another contract with another weapons dealer that can better provide for them, once the inquisition forces are on par with the military might of Val Royeuax.

Later his eyes drift to someone closer to home, someone that can stay by his side, and not die at the whims of an ancient god.

Later Joy catches herself spending more time with Cullen, and Varric, and Dorian.

Later, later they pass each other on the halls with barely an acknowledgment - a smile, a brief greeting.

Later life moves on, and their thirst is lost in the history books.

But for now he’s here, now they’re together, now he’s touching her with want, for now they want each other like normal men and women do in countless other times, for now her muffled cries bring a look of manly pride to his eyes, and his gasps and groans lit a fire in her.
