Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia)

The rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) is a bright-fruit tree, best known for adorning our streets, gardens and the highlands with its striking colour. It's also known as the mountain ash due to the fact that it grows well at high altitudes. The flowers provide pollen and nectar for bees, while the berries are a rich source of autumn food for birds, especially the blackbird, mistle thrush, redstart, redwing, song thrush, fieldfare and waxwing. 

Alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus)

The alder buckthorn is unrelated to the alder. It's a colourful tree native to England and Wales, most of Europe, northern Africa and western Asia. 

Alder buckthorn is the food plant of the brimstone butterfly, whose caterpillars eat the leaves. Its flowers provide a source of pollen and nectar for bees and other insects, and its berries are eaten by birds.

It was formerly used as a purgative, which was thought to help rid the body of illness and disease although now it has different uses. A yellow dye is obtained from the leaves and bark. It is used in Russia and turns black when mixed with salts of iron. 

Dog rose (Rosa canina)

Dog rose is one of the most colourful of the UK's woodland wildflowers. A thorny climber, it has curved spines to gain a purchase as it weaves in between other shrubs, and its large pink or white five petalled flowers have a faint sweet smell.

The flowers and fruits are an important food source for birds and insects, and it's high Vitamin C content meant it was traditionally used to make syrups. You can learn more about dog rose at
