Common kitchen herbs: Part One
Beginner witch with just whatâs in your kitchen? You just moved and your altar is all packed up in one of these damned boxes? No problem. Witchcraft is fluid and flexible and that means the ingredients you use in certain spells and rituals are too.Â
Remember to always work in a cleansed and protected place!
Welcome to Common Kitchen Herbs (and what they can do for you), Part One:Â Rosemary
Rosemary is a fantastic beginning herb because itâs extremely versatile. Even dried, it can be used to quickly cleanse, protect you, and even help filter your dreams. Of course it can do so much more, but Iâm not here to tell you everything, Iâm here to tell you a few neat things you can do in hopes it will inspire your own research!
Burning a bit of rosemary and wafting it about your space is a great way to sort of whim away negative energy. Is it as powerful as a deep cleanse with juniper, salt, and sage water (see post labeled âDeep Cleansingâ, look up tag juniper salt and sage water)? Well, no, but for a quick cleanse itâs a great temporary set-up. Just remember that if you use older dried rosemary, well, it doesnât smell the best. I personally use about a teaspoon and half and let it smolder completely down and walk a perimeter around my area of practice. Remember to keep a window cracked open while cleansing!
To help protect yourself, take a little bag and stuff some rosemary inside and carry about with you in your pocket or purse. I personally donât like using plastic in my practices, so even a scrap of cloth quickly stitched in half, stuffed, and stitched closed has served the purpose well. If at all possible, add in some protective stones, and maybe some cinnamon, basil, cloves, or ginger. Rosemary is a good boost to what is essentially your âbad vibes immune systemâ and is always good to have on your person. However, remember that intent is key, so remember to charge your magic crafts! (See âCharging Magical Items post for ideas).Â
Not native and don't want to appropriate dream catchers? Take some rosemary and fold it into a breathable bag (or another stitched little pack as mentioned above). After that, charge it with your intent and put it in your pillow case or underneath your pillow. Worried about knocking it off your bed? Untuck the fitted sheet and pin it between the fitted sheet and the mattress. Personally, I have used a rosemary, salt, juniper, and orange peel (dried) pack.Â
Rosemary is also an ingredient often used in love and lust magic, but as I said before and I will always say; witchcraft is to be used for good intentions. Do not cast love and lust magic on ANYONE who has not clearly consented to being cast on.Â
