I was talking to a friend today about religious intolerance in Pakistan. It’s really surprising to see to what extremes a debate can go between two healthy educated people of sound mind.
I’ve seen highly educated people talk about Islam in a scary way, and some others talking about liberalism.
The truth is, as long as we’re a country run by religion, the more the liberal ‘agenda’ (as they call it) grows, the more the conservative people will become aggressive.
The more and more posts we see saying ‘it’s her body let her do or wear whatever she wants’, the more people will respond with ‘when you see someone indulging in a sin, you have to stop them by tongue and then by hand (as stated in Hadith) and if you can’t do that then you must know it is bad in your heart’. The more we see ‘i dont mind LGBT people, let them live their lives how does it affect us?’ the more people will talk about ‘how being too open minded makes your brain tumble out and how we’re the ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF PAKISTAN and if someone doesn’t like the rules of islam they should leave the country’
My point is, even though the liberals are growing and becoming more and more aware with each passing day, the other side of the wing will also become more and more extreme the more the liberals grow. If one side starts speaking up, it wont squash the other side it will aggravate it further. The road we’re on, it will only lead to mutual annihilation if we don’t change things.
I’m not exactly sure how, but we have got to find a way around this new wave of religious intolerance.
