Section Summary - Chapters 1 - 8
In the first section (chapters 1-8) the 3 Arts get introduced as well as the friend and the future girlfriend of the Eastern Standard Tribe Art. The Art sitting on the roof of the sanatorium introduces himself and the other two Arts and acts narrator-like. During the first section sanatorium Art gets locked on the roof of the sanatorium and he drops a brick down onto a car and watches the car explode, which I believe to be a hallucination. Art Berry is also introduced; he is the one who is introduced as one who likes to argue. Then the Eastern Standard Tribe Art is introduced as well as the Eastern Standard Tribe. EST Art is the only character to introduce the other named characters.
This section relates to the story as a whole by introducing the characters, setting scenes, as well as introducing plot, theme, and foil of theme. The characters are the 3 Arts and the two supporting characters thus far. The scenes thus far are the roof of the sanatorium and London. The theme of the story, which is introduced by sanatorium Art as, “Would you rather be smart or happy?” He also states that Art Berry will be the foil of the theme. The answer to the theme will be answered by sanatorium Art, so Art Berry being his usual argumentative self will be the one to argue that, in turn emphasizing it.
The characters in the section seem to be acting on their own, but at other times there is a bleeding of view points or ideas into the other. The sanatorium Art is the one who prompts the questions and now must be the one to find a way off of the sanatorium roof. Art Berry’s purpose seems to be to argue the theme as well as others he comes in contact with, simply because that is in his nature. The EST Art is going about his normal life, he has met his future exgirlfriend, crashed a car, and hired a lawyer from within the Eastern Standard Tribe. What his purpose for the story has yet to be seen by myself.
The technology that has been involved thus far has been the communicator of the Eastern Standard Tribe Art, which appears to be a smart phone. Cars, where one crashes and the other “explodes,” as well as 999, the emergency number in London.
