Adding onto this, make sure that before you start cutting, the marker is dry. Another idea would be to use both ends of a cup that widens outward to make both the inner and outer circles, if the proportions match up well. You can also try painting it in black, or even spray paint. Just cover the design you want to preserve in tape, like blue paint tape. I think that'd make it a bit smoother looking. :)
