She knew what Mrs Coulter meant: she had expected her to try and run. Lyra planned on it though, just not quite yet. It was easier to just go along with her mother until the perfect opportunity arose for Lyra to escape. If she didnât find one on her own, Will would find her and rescue her, she was certain of it. Theyâd be together again soon enough.
âWill left me alone.â Lyra scowled slightly, hoping to give the impression that she was upset with Will. âIf Iâm in danger like you say, Iâd rather be with someone whoâs been looking for me all this time anâ I know wouldnât do that.â Her lips then upturned in a smile that she hoped would be enough, along with her words, to keep her mother sweet.
âWhere are we going?â
Marisa still half expected Lyra to run, as she remembered her daughterâs deception at Bolvangar very vividly. She remembered fully believing Lyra, trusting her completely, so happy to have her back, and then very soon being met with the spyfly that struck her face. She was determined to not make the same mistake again. She would cautiously watch Lyra and if she got any sense she was trying to escape, she would pounce. Marisa didnât like having this relationship with her child, but it was better than the alternative of her child being dead.
âWeâre almost there. Itâs an old building in a valley where we will hopefully be safe for a while.â she told her. âAs for Will, I understand your anger towards him. However, he might be useful in keeping you safe if we see him again. He could cut us into a different world where hopefully the Magisterium wonât be able to go. But I didnât have time to wait for him, because you are in danger. I wouldnât be out here in the wilderness like this if you werenât.â
