Why duality appears so deeply built into ordinary consciousness?
The organism survives by distinguishing self from world, food from poison, safety from danger, mate from rival. Boundaries are operational necessities. A deer that experiences complete undifferentiated unity with the wolf does not pass on many genes. Evolution therefore favors nervous systems that exaggerate separateness because separateness is behaviorally useful.
But at the same time, reflection allows the organism to notice something strange. The boundaries that feel absolute are also constructed models. Biologically, chemically, physically, everything is continuous exchange. Your body is made from what was once non-you. Air enters you. Bacteria participate in you. Language shapes you. Society shapes you. Even your sense of self depends on nervous system processes you did not choose. The “self” is less like an isolated stone and more like a temporary whirlpool in a river. This produces the strange split. The organism operates through dualistic modeling because survival requires distinctions, yet deeper analysis reveals interdependence everywhere. The brain can therefore generate moments where the usual self-world division weakens and a person feels unity instead of separation.
But this does not necessarily mean they have escaped evolution or perceived metaphysical truth directly. Those states may themselves be possible modes of the same biological system. The brain is capable of loosening its ordinary predictive boundaries under certain conditions such as exhaustion, trauma, meditation, drugs, ritual, intense emotion, neurological disruption, or philosophical absorption. The organism can temporarily stop emphasizing separateness so strongly.
What is often misunderstood is treating these unity experiences as supernatural revelations rather than as alternate configurations of cognition. The dualistic mode is adaptive for everyday navigation. The unity mode may reveal aspects of interconnectedness normally filtered out for practical functioning. Both emerge from the same organism.
Kant would say that neither mode gives access to “things in themselves.” Both are still forms of human experience structured through human cognition. The dualistic mode organizes action and survival. The unity mode destabilizes ordinary distinctions and reveals their constructed character. But both remain experiences occurring within the conditions of a human nervous system.
The irony is profound. Evolution built a creature so effective at modeling distinctions that it can eventually notice the artificiality of its own distinctions. Consciousness becomes a tool that can partially expose the limits of the very survival interface that produced it. The web develops enough complexity to notice strands of the web.
And yet even that insight occurs inside the web, not outside it.
