One of the things I find interesting is that even when portrayed within a shell, the lower half keeps its aquatic essence like common depictions of the Sea Goat. Capricorn is often shown with a distinctive curl in its tail, but when inside of a seashell, this curling or spiral effect is brilliantly retained with the design of the shell itself.
Symbolically, shells are a study unto themselves.
They're often associated with goddesses and their spiral design speaks to what's sometimes referred to as the "curves of life".
" But as much as they're associated with generative properties, they've also been strongly tied to death, the underworld and have been used for funerary purposes. I find all of these connections more than fitting for the sign associated with Saturn.
Naturally, shells also correspond with vessel and protection symbolism due to their shape and because they house some crustaceans and mollusks. Curiously enough, Capricorn's opposite sign is Cancer, which is known for its shell.
