After my first year at community college, COVID hit and shut everything down. Luckily, I could still take classes online and keep my job as a student worker in the VA office. It was basically just me and one other coworker holding it down for a while. I kept doing well in school too, mostly A’s, with the occasional very annoying B+.

With help from one of the VA advisors, I applied to San Diego State. And I got in!

Which was exciting, but also kind of terrifying. The only person in my family who had gone to college was my older sister Sam, who had earned her masters despite dropping out of high school when she found out she was pregnant at 18 years old, raising her daughter Destiny as a single mom, and working full time while going to school full time. Yeah, she was a badass.

When I started at SDSU in Fall 2021, I felt like an imposter. At community college, I felt confident, I participated, I knew what I was doing.

At SDSU? Everyone participated, everyone sounded smart. The covid shutdown was finally lifted and let us go back to class in person. It was a lot to process.

So naturally, I spiraled a little. I started going to the free therapy sessions on campus, mostly because I was going through a long term relationship break up and starting university was overwhelming. I told my therapist how I felt like I didn’t think I belonged there.

She gave me some advice, “The next time you hear someone say something smart in class, tell them.” So I did. After class, I went up to someone and told them that I thought what they said in class was really smart. And they looked at me and said, “Thanks, I feel like you always say really smart things.”

That was the first time it clicked that maybe the problem wasn’t that I didn’t belong, that maybe I was just in my own head about it. From there, things started to feel different. Not perfect, but manageable and I kept showing up and doing the work and figuring out life in between.

And by Fall 2022, I graduated from San Diego State with a 3.89 GPA, Summa Cum Laude! I didn’t even know what that meant at the time, I had to look it up. My sister Sam visited to watch me graduate, and she was so proud of me.
