The BMW Z4 sDrive35iS.
We had this on test a long while ago, but still have fond memories. The 250kW/450Nm engine is about the same as was later used in the 1-series M Coupé, though in this instance mated to a 7-speed DCT. The 1M would have it transfer power through a 6-speed manual.
Abiding memory of the Z4? The punch. Though it's not a lightweight - in excess of 1600kg, which is 150kg heavier than the previous-gen Z4 M Roadster - acceleration was stomach-churning. Less so for its driver, who has something to hold on to, but passengers were always squirming in their seats.
It's not the easiest car to drive hard, especially if you're not used to being seated near the rear axle. It'll surprise you the first time it breaks loose, but if you're gentle with throttle inputs it'll slither around rewardingly.
It costs a bit more than the TT-RS roadster, and the Mercedes Benz SLK350 also beats it on price. Both those cars don't have anything on the Z4 for looks, though. It looks contemporary, yet timeless. And the boosted six makes the sweetest music.
