Scrum Position
Wells says rugby is simple.
Get low. Bind tight. Drive hard. Do not come up until Coach blows the whistle.
Of course, he says that while crouched in the mud, shirtless, soaked, and looking like the scrum personally requested him by name.
Top of the pile? Wells can handle it. Under three burly rugby bros? Wells can handle that too. Pressed into the mud with the whole Golden Army pushing behind him?
Bro, that is not pressure.
That is formation.
Mud everywhere. Gold barely visible. Thighs locked. Back arched. Smirk criminal. Wells does not care where he ends up in the pack as long as the contact is full, the grip is firm, and nobody pulls out before the drive is finished.
Some players fear the scrum.
Wells hears bind and engage and suddenly becomes very coachable.
Ruck, maul, tackle, repeat.
That is the drill.
That is the Gold.
That is why Wells never asks whether he is on top or bottom.
He just checks the field, flashes that grin, and waits for Coach to tell him where to put his hands.
