An additional little thing to get to know our ScrubClan kitties <3 Ever wonder who is besties, and who might be harboring secret hatreds? Here's a sneak peek into some of ScrubClan's important cats and their relationships.
Snowstar believes her job as leader is to be the voice of all her Clanmates, and as such, spends much of her time socializing among them, gathering opinions, getting to know their fears and worries, and trying her best to be a trustworthy ear for any concerns.
Unsurprisingly, Snowstar is closest with her mate, Sycamorenewt, who she loves more than anything else in this world. She is also very close with Lionspirit, Hawthornrose, and Patchbat, who are her primary advisors. Patchbat for relationships, as the extroverted molly always has her paw on the pulse of the Clan; Hawthornrose for security, as the cold tomcat will always give her a realistic view without sugarcoating; Lionspirit, her deputy, for everything else, as she's come to rely on him heavily in all matters. The two rarely make choices before talking about them extensively first. Lionspirit has grown a lot since Snowstar mentored him, all those moons ago, and Snowstar lives her life confidently, knowing he'll make a brilliant leader if anything happens to her.
While Snowstar likes many cats and understands their viewpoints... she is very hesitant to place her trust in others. Cats like Thymebush, Stoneflyash, Zell and even Tuftglide are good companions, but Snowstar struggles to take that final leap of faith, and secretly harbors fears that they'll abandon their ideals when pushed to their limits.
However, the only cat that Snowstar actively distrusts is Flamesplinter. She still sees him as Sycamorenewt's apprentice, and will always go to Sycamorenewt for health questions, even when Flamesplinter has been running the healer's den for the better part of three years now. Snowstar also dislikes being around Eggplantskip. It's not anything personal, their personalities just don't mesh very well and she finds Eggplantskip just a bit too loud and immature for her to be ideal company.
(More under the cut~!)
Lionspirit is extremely close with his son, Tuftglide, especially after Ivytail's sudden death. He worries about Tuftglide's recent troubles, but isn't quite sure how to support him. Where Lionspirit used to be a responsible cat with a level head, he's started second guessing his own choices, and his worry for Tuftglide is really starting to get to his head.
Other than Snowstar, Lionspirit spends most of his free time with Flamesplinter, and considers the head healer his best friend. They grew up together, after all, and Lionspirit is more upset about Snowstar's dismissal of Flamesplinter's skills than Flamesplinter is. When Flamesplinter is busy, Lionspirit hangs out with Patchbat or Stoneflyash.
Lionspirit and Eggplantskip never really got over their argument. Although Lionspirit's apologies helped cool the animosity between the two, he's reminded of his guilt every time he sees her, and so the two remain cordial, but distant.
Sycamorenewt's entire first page is dedicated to family: her mate Snowstar, her daughters Patchbat, Eggplantskip and Stoneflyash, her granddaughter Glorypounce, and Snowstar's kits Hawkweedbreeze and Burrecho. She's really settled down, and she loves having a large family with all her heart (she's probably been hinting at having another litter herself, wanting to raise one more litter in retirement).
Unsurprisingly, the cat she interacts with most outside her family is Flamesplinter. She actually doesn't like him very much, and thinks he's a bit too arrogant and rude to be a good healer, but she can admit he's a fantastic healer and trusts him to work on her own once she's fully retired.
Funnily enough, she dislikes and doubts Graylingmeadow, despite their familial relationship and his status as a healer. She was very unimpressed by his clumsiness when he was training in ScrubClan, and privately thinks one day he's going to fail to hold his nerve when a cat's life is on the line. Sycamorenewt also distrusts Tuftglide and Thistlegaze; she thinks the two are up to something, and keeps urging Snowstar to push harder and figure out what trouble they're in before it becomes a danger to all of ScrubClan.
As the Clan's head healer, Flamesplinter spends most of his professional time in the company of Snowstar, Sycamorenewt and Lionspirit, all of which he'd consider friends as well as coworkers. He respects Sycamorenewt highly, and will consider her his mentor until she dies. He's honestly quite amused by the fact that Snowstar doesn't trust him--he doesn't care that she goes to Sycamorenewt, he's busy enough with the rest of the Clan, and Sycamorenewt knows her more intimately anyways. He and Lionspirit are besties, though, and Flamesplinter will go to him first if he needs warriors assigned to him for the day.
Flamesplinter is very close with Hawthornrose, and still spars with the warrior from time to time. He still thinks the old tomcat is making up unrealistic fighting moves, though. Of the younger cats, he respects Buntingjay the most; Flamesplinter sees a lot of his own drive in the young warrior, and tries to encourage her to stand up for herself whenever he can.
Like Sycamorenewt, Flamesplinter worries for HoundClan in the paws of Graylingmeadow. He's not afraid to press the young healer during Gatherings, and often threatens to send Spittlebugspeck over there to help out (partially to get rid of Spittlebugspeck for a short while. Flamesplinter thinks Spittlebugspeck only became a healer for the power it brought, and trusts the young cat with nothing besides daily chores, which makes them both resentful of each other.)
Spittlebugspeck's best friend is Buntingjay, though she certainly wouldn't think so. After all, is Spittlebugspeck silently fuming in a corner beside her really the basis of a friendship? He certainly thinks so, and appreciates that Buntingjay never shies away from him, even when he's at his most snappish.
Spittlebugspeck has a crush on Glorypounce, though this is also not reciprocated. Probably because Spittlebugspeck thinks bragging is the same thing as flirting, and is blind to the fact that Glorypounce is very uncomfortable around him.
Eggplantskip, Hawthornrose, and Vultureshock are the cats Spittlebugspeck goes to when he needs a warrior escort to gather herbs. He trusts their superior fighting skills to keep him safe, and thinks they are the best warriors the Clan has to offer.
Spittlebugspeck respects his mentor, Sycamorenewt, but resents Flamesplinter for refusing to give him anything even remotely challenging to do. He chafes under Flamesplinter's micromanaging, and thinks Flamesplinter is intentionally making him look bad by hoarding all the tasks that might give Spittlebugspeck the chance to prove himself. This WILL come to a head soon, and any cat that spends any time in the healer's den can feel the air fizzing between the two toms, heavy as a thunderhead and just waiting for something to spark...
Glorypounce's insecurities make it challenging for her to make and maintain friendships. Her main social outlet is still her mother, Stoneflyash, despite Stoneflyash trying to push her to make friends with some of the younger warriors.
Of the cats, though, Buntingjay is the easiest for Glorypounce to be around. She admires the young warrior's confidence, and though she rarely musters the courage to talk to Buntingjay, Glorypounce often admires her from afar. Glorypounce fancies Lionspirit; she has not told a single soul, and keeps her pining very distant. Besides, he's much too old for her. Still, she can't help that her heart flutters when he turns his attention on her, and on those rare occasions where she earns a compliment from him? Ugh.
Glorypounce is very uncomfortable with Spittlebugspeck's "flirting" and avoids him by all means possible. She's relieved that Flamesplinter has seemed to pick up on her discomfort and sends Spittlebugspeck away when she's forced to drop into the healer's den. She's very grateful to Flamesplinter for his insight, and thinks he is very trustworthy.
Burrecho is a young cat still building his relationships with the warriors now that he's seen as an equal. He's very happy to have his best friend Scorpionspeckle in the Clan; the two have been meeting up in secret for a few moons now, and Burrecho likes having a friend that is his first (Hawkweedbreeze doesn't count. She's his only littermate and is practically forced to be his best friend and confidant under sibling code.)
Burrecho sees Hawthornrose as his mentor more than Glorypounce, as he's the one that taught Burrecho how to mediate between Clanmates when Glorypounce was entirely disinterested in that side of his training.
Surprisingly, Burrecho hates Cypresspaw. It's not like his hatred is based on anything she did to him, or even the long term resentment like that which sours relationships between Flamesplinter and Spittlebugpaw, or Lionspirit and Eggplantskip. Burrecho simply thinks Cypresspaw is whiny, and weak-willed, and supremely, utterly annoying.
Burrecho actually avoids socializing with many cats in ScrubClan. He wants to build a reputation as a neutral party, and he can't do that if his own personal relationships tangle with his work. He doesn't want to stay aloof forever, but until he can get the trust of his fellow Clanmates as a fair and unbiased mediator, he's been intentionally limiting his interactions to his family members and Scorpionspeckle.

In lieu of a moon today, have a deep dive into ScrubClan's cats! Profiles beneath the cut~ Enjoy!
Our wonderful leader, Snowstar! She's a cat that always tries her best, even when it's hard. She feels like she's the only responsible one in all the Clans, and though she's outwardly kind, inwardly harbors some resentment for her Clanmates and fellow leaders for not pulling their weight and putting more on her (even if those responsibilities are largely self inflicted). Snowstar isn't particularly tall, but she's thin and angular and has a noble bearing that makes her seem like she's towering over even the tallest of cats.
Lionspirit certainly got into a lot of trouble as a young cat, but he quickly learned to take responsibility for his actions and grew into a reliable, practical warrior. He made himself into Lindenhope's steady rock, his quiet shadow, and without Lindenhope he feels directionless, lost. Lionspirit is also tall and angular, but with thin paws and dark fur, he can easily slip into the shadows and disappear. He has a bad habit of startling cats and typically very intentionally drags his paws so others can hear him coming.
Sycamorenewt became a healer because she hates seeing other cats hurt. She is highly empathetic and finds it easy to feel others' pain. This is both a blessing and a burden, and it's really worn Sycamorenewt down over the years. She is very happy to have an apprentice; as soon as Flamesplinter was ready to take on full healer duties, Sycamorenewt all but retired, leaving daily tasks to him and fading back into a secondary role. Now that Spittlebugpaw is also in the healer's den helping, she is more than happy to focus all her energy on Snowstar, kitsitting the Clan's kits, and being there for her daughters.
Flamesplinter might be short-tempered and sarcastic, but he's a damn good healer. He strives to be the very best at everything he does, which is why he's one of the Clan's best duelists despite being a healer. He is incredibly self-motivated, but only when he feels he has an active rival can he truly push himself to his top form. Flamesplinter loves the challenges of being a Clan healer. He is very gay.
Young Spittlebugpaw might be new to the Clan, but he's already found a place for himself. He's the type of cat that is always scheming, always with a plan, and despite his youth is cunning and ruthless. He will always find a way to get what he wants. Spittlebugpaw is often compared to Flamesplinter, as the two were both rescued as kittens and are both driven, intelligent cats. At first, Spittlebugpaw disliked being compared to another cat, but after getting to know Flamesplinter, he grudgingly admits they have a lot of common; he's not one to pass up an opportunity, and so he switched paths to be a healer to learn from Flamesplinter, recognizing that he has the potential to be just as good a healer as him, if not better.
For a lot of her life, Cottonwhisper has been a forthright and combative cat, saying what she means without sugar coating anything. She was known for being prickly and easy to upset, and for a long time, few cats tried to get to know the rude elder. But then she fell for Crocusfox, and while she didn't suddenly become a fluffy kitten, she is a lot more patient than she once was, less likely to snap and chase a cat out of her den, at least. Besides having bad hips, Cottonwhisper is fairly healthy for her age. She still has her wits, at least, and tells the best stories in the whole Clan.
Thymebush was a confident cat, but without her physical prowess, she's beginning to lose that, growing unsure of herself and her choices. She has to remind herself daily that it's okay for her to retire, but she laments that it was her twisted leg that made the choice for her. Thymebush is still good with crafts, spending her days weaving and repairing camp, and she is nothing if not optimistic, starting each day with a smile and doing her best to spread joy to her Clanmates. But it's harder than it once was.
Hawthornrose, the Clan's best fighter and teacher, and the cat everyone goes to when something needs doing. He's always happy to help, finding great satisfaction for being useful and for seeing a job through to the end, though he might grumble that other cats should learn how to fix things themselves instead of crying to him every time. Hawthornrose is exceptional at compartmentalizing--probably to an unhealthy level--and tends to act as the Clan's mediator when arguments break out, both because of his exceptional willpower, but also because he's big enough to step in between cats without getting hurt. He can be quite opinionated, but keeps his opinions to himself.
Oh, Zell. Formerly a loner and a very introverted cat, Zell only stayed with ScrubClan because Aeris fell in love with the Clan, and Zell was hopelessly in love with Aeris. He'd enjoyed being pulled around by Aeris, felt comfortable enough as Aeris's shadow. But now that Aeris is gone... Zell hates the rogues that took Aeris away from him, and he's torn between hunting down the two that managed to flee, or convincing the Clan to help him search for the rogue's main camp, so he can cut the snake off at the head.
Stoneflyash is a leader. Even if she's the youngest cat on patrol, she's often promoted to patrol leader, and other cats defer to her to make decisions. She's very good at compromising and making sound choices under pressure, though she has a bit of an impulsive streak when it comes to saving others, having a bit of a hero complex where she thinks everyone's safety is her responsibility to the point of forgoing her own safety to save another. Despite her levelheadedness, Stoneflyash can be a jealous cat, though she feels ashamed of it and tries to bury it as deeply as she can.
Patchbat has always been the baby of the Clan, and perhaps always will be. She's a bundle of sunshine, and most cats dismiss her as innocent or naive, forgetting that she had a traumatic moon separated from the Clan in the hands of twolegs. Part of Patchbat's upbeat personality is because she wants to enjoy every moment to the fullest, fully realizing it could all be taken away so quickly. Patchbat is very friendly with all cats, though some of them read her friendliness and casual touch as flirting. The only cat Patchbat has ever had a crush on is Zell, mostly because his quiet brooding and air of mystery enthralls her. Patchbat is asexual.
Eggplantskip was once a troublesome kitten and a reckless apprentice, but she's mellowed out a lot over the seasons. She has a poor immune system and tends to suffer from seasonal allergies and sicknesses, which has put a damper on her enthusiasm and forced her to learn to enjoy quieter moments. Eggplantskip is still fiercely protective of her sisters, and like Stoneflyash, often leaps into danger to shield others without thinking of her own safety. She feels acute survivor's guilt that Aeris died saving her, though it hasn't quite hit her through the shock of battle yet. Eggplantskip is aromantic.
Glorypaw is still a bit of a diva, but at least she's focused. She doesn't do well with being physically uncomfortable, though, which tests Zell's patience when she refuses to walk on a texture she doesn't like or won't leave her nest until the dew burns off. Glorypaw is unsure of what to think of her half-Clan heritage and is still trying to mentally tackle the fact that she has family she barely knows in HoundClan.
Buntingkit, Ivykit, and Tuftkit, Lindenhope and Lionspirit's litter. Tuftkit might be the largest of the three, but he's the quietest. It might be Ivykit that begs for stories, but Tuftkit is paying the most attention to them. Buntingkit used to be the most outgoing of the three, but she's taken to being Lionspirit's shadow and is determined to be as stealthy as her dad. Ivykit was closest to Lindenhope, who was the only one who could get him to behave. After Lindenhope's death, Ivykit has been inconsolable and acts out, needing constant supervision.
Vulturekit had a close call in the fight with the rogues, but was saved by Snowstar. Luckily, the two kittens were too young to remember most of it. It's hard for Cottonwhisper to be around Thistlekit, as he reminds her greatly of Juniperpaw. Thistlekit doesn't understand why Vulturekit gets more praise and touch and is always trying to get Cottonwhisper's attention.

For those of you curious to ScrubClan's ecology and where I'm drawing inspiration from, this is for you!
First, ScrubClan's territory is not 1-to-1 realistic to any real world location. I'm taking quite a few creative liberties with some things (most specifically the severity of wet and dry seasons, and dramatically smoothing temperature curves to better fit Clangen's natural risk factors).
However, I do take lots of inspirations from real world ecosystems! ScrubClan most closely resembles the rocky scrublands of southwestern Texas (description of common plants in this specific environment [here] and a very detailed wikipedia article on the ecoregion as a whole [here]).
Their territory is mostly flat with some rocky ridges/gullies and many, many stone-filled channels where seasonal rivers run. They have a few notable plateaus and buttes (particularly to the northwest, where BoulderClan lives) and a very important lowland near their camp, which retains some water even in the dry season and constitutes their most important hunting grounds. The lowlands also have the most diverse scrub, including some of ScrubClan's only trees (besides lonely copses of low growth mesquite scattered throughout the scrub).
For the most part, ScrubClan cats are well hidden under the thick tangles of low brush. They tend to avoid the open, rocky clearings, though some patrols are forced into the open to cross dry arroyos, or to help gather rare herbs.
Coyote are by far the most common predators in the area, but occasionally badgers and bobcats pass through. Hawks are also relatively common, though not typically a threat to an adult cat; eagles, more rare, are a large threat, and every warrior knows how to check the skies as they patrol.
As for prey, ground squirrels are hard to catch due to their speed, but are a staple for ScrubClan. Birds of all sorts are common prey items, ambushed as they fly between scrub brushes, as are smaller rodents. Fish are hunted as a novelty treat in the wet season, and reptiles may be hunted in times of desperation, but are rarely preferred.
