She wondered how strange it was for demon slayers to work together. From what she’d seen it was rare--it was more effective for them to split up.. but they’d been warned that this demon was a little more than the run-of-the-mill type that they fought. This was one more powerful--not quite part of the upper or lower ranks but certainly stronger than the others.
And Shinjuro had asked her to come along, so she’d agreed. It had been a while since she’d seen him or even got the chance to talk to them between them both working on their respective lives-- Astra, finishing her sword training and his Hashira duties. There were times when she thought that this was just a favor that her father happened to ask for.. but sometimes it was easy to believe they were friends. Even if he was fully an adult. With a child.
The crow gave another set of directions. It was easy to follow.
And what they stumbled into was decidedly horrifying. A child running from a demon--a snake demon, at that--and the two of them jumped into action. Shinjuro ran directly to the demon while Astra positioned herself between the child and it--just in case it decided to come after it’s prey again.
Her hands gripped her sword and as she thought, the demon made another attempt to get at the child. Astra moved through the katas the same as Shinjuro did, her double-edged sword slicing through what she could reach.
Between the both of them, the demon was slain and it’s blood dissipated into the air the same way that mist burned off underneath the sun. She made sure to wipe the nichirin blade clean on the red part of her haori, sliding it back into it’s sheath before she turned to him.
It was really the first time that she was actually looking at him. The bandages over his face, the snake around his neck. The heterochromatic eyes. It was obvious he’d been in a chase..and maybe worse, looking at the bandages.. but the question was.. ‘is he the last one alive?’ or ‘did the demon single him out first?’ And then-- the snake--perhaps that’s what drew the demon to him?
They would figure that out soon.
She reached out a gloved hand to him, her face relaxed. She heard Shinjuro approach her side--she knew he had his arms folded across his chest and his eyes alert. Finally, she spoke. “It didn’t hurt you, did it? We came as soon as we could.”
The two of them looked a sight. Shinjuro with his flame-Hashira cape and Astra in her red-to-green gradient haori and her thick insulated blood-red gloves. Shinjuro flipped around, walking off in another direction--more than likely going to find where it came from. “Shinjuro’s going to find it’s nest. He can handle it on his own. For now we’ll just wait here. It’s safer that way.” He was easier to protect, she meant.
“I have some water.. and I made some rice balls before we left. They’re not the greatest, but they taste okay! And by that I mean they look like I smashed ‘em together-- because I did.” Truly, the rice balls looked more like squares--some patches missing and crumbled away. They sat in a box wrapped in rice paper.
