i read your post about your vv lore and i'm curious: who do you think set the fire?
i'll put this under a read more in case it comes as a spoiler to anyone, idk. me and my friends plan to make our own custom vv hood(s) sometime in the future and this would deffo be a part of that. anyway long post incoming!
growing up, goneril was expected to be the family heiress albeit reluctantly as her mother always hated her, seemingly since the moment she was born. sure, she's ruthless and hardworking as any exemplar capp lady should be, but contessa simply couldn't excuse her idolization of her deceased grandmother, scribonia, who—coincidentally—contessa also hated. she knew that, ultimately, goneril could never head one of the most powerful dynasties in all of europe, and was just hoping one of her future sisters could take her place.
another factor against goneril was her impulsivity which always got the best of her in moments of rage, a direct contrast to her more cunning sister regan whose talent lies in the art of calm and careful manipulation. even so, contessa couldn't envision the next capp matriarch in regan either, and her closeness to her loathed older sister certainly didn't help.
dissatisfied with her first two FLOPS, contessa kept trying for the perfect heiress until she finally settled on cordelia, the…sweetest? of her siblings. the thing with cordy is that she never particularly cared for the family business and preferred doing her own thing, somehow intriguing contessa. it meant she wasn't a kiss-ass like her sisters and never caused many problems. even as she grew more rebellious—defending her outcast brother kent and refusing to marry prince escalus as was originally arranged for her—contessa never doubted her potential, even for a second. after all, she was never wrong about anything.
of course, to goneril, that was an extremely misguided decision, perhaps the worst a person could make. but who was to question her mother's judgment? even with cordelia's numerous incompatibilities with the mere idea of what a capp heiress should be, the most egregious of all was her dreams of peace between the capp and monty clans. ironically, a unification of the families was what scribonia had in the cards before her untimely demise and was even one of the biggest reasons contessa despised her, being as anti-monty as she is. in fact goneril had always admired her grandmother's leadership qualities, never her attempts at fraternization (i.e. arranging a marriage between contessa & patrizio), and always sought to take revenge on the montys for her death…
and yet here was cordelia capp, somehow able to escape her mother's scrutiny even when advocating for the one family she hated more than anything in the known universe. goneril's future was bright before, her destiny already written in stone. but then she was born, and suddenly nothing made sense anymore. there had always been a smoldering fire at goneril's core, something she suppressed in fear of compromising her worth to her family, and it was regan who was able to unleash it. regan, always at her sister's side, always knowing the right thing to say, always fanning that flame—it should have come as no surprise when that flame finally burned.
once it did, the catastrophe it left behind was swiftly cleaned up and the blame rested on the montys' heads. regretting her crimes as soon as the smoke cleared, goneril confessed to her parents. despite killing contessa capp's favorite daughter, no punishment was imposed on her, but perhaps something much worse: indifference. it was a natural talent of the family, the ability to gaze upon someone with so much blankness, so little emotion, that it becomes overwhelming.
in the end, goneril would never become heiress nor would she ever become her mother's favorite no matter what actions she took—and this was just a simple truth she had to accept.

According to Patrizio, Scribonia was the scariest member of the Capp family by far. In fact, each time Isabella referred to Contessa Capp as a "Machiavellian Nightmare," Patrizio would retort that Scribonia "would have given Machiavelli nightmares."
I never really touched the Veronaville family but I thought it would be fun to redesign them with more period accuracy. Anyway, I'm not too familiar with Shakespeare, history, and peerage, so correct me if I'm mistaken or let me know if you have suggestions!
Firstly we've got Cleopatra and Antony Capp, the founders of the Capp family. I picture Lady Cleopatra as nobility in Veronaville, as Countess of Veronaville and the matriarch of the House of Capp. Her husband was Lord Antony, Count of Veronaville, who was her loyal supporter and managed the territory and its various estates.
Their daughter, Lady Scribonia, was a sickly equestrian and the only heiress to the House of Capp, which was becoming impoverished. She had an arranged marriage with Octavius, Baron of Monte Vista, an ambitious man from a more powerful but lesser ranking family.
Despite taking the Capp name, his family's wealth and influence saved the Capp's legacy when he worked together with his father-in-law, Antony.
The marriage of Octavius and Scribonia produced only one heiress, Lady Contessa Capp. Scribonia died early on, and left her daughter Contessa to be raised by Octavius and her grandparents, but Octavius too would die.
Octavius' father, Lord Julius Caesar, the previous Baron of Monte Vista and a local politician, was not a well-liked man who was assasinated by his enemies. He left behind Lady Calpurnia, the Dowager Baroness of Veronaville, as his widow. She was the one that arranged the union of Octavius and Scribonia.
Though the House of Capp remained strong in Veronaville, they were no longer considered as true ‘nobility’. With the passing of Cleopatra, Contessa would become the matriarch of the family.
She was known as Lady Contessa, Countess of Veronaville, who was brought up by her maternal grandfather and paternal grandmother. In her old age, she reigned on as an influential figure in the founding of Veronaville and the president of the family estate.
Valentine Monty, Vicentino Pantalone, Scribonia Capp, Andromache Thebe, Silvia Capitano, Francisca Zanni, Octavius Caesar, and Hector Albion were teenagers in the swinging late 20s, and were developing feelings that they were not familiar with.
They all felt the pressure of living up to their pioneering parents expectations, and they all could relate to one another about that pressure.
