Today I am reviewing Scribbed, a unique side-scrolling platformer. It plays a lot like something you would have found on the Super Nintendo, and looks like something you doodled on your notes as a child.

The controls are tight and it plays very similar to many old school platformers. This includes the difficulty. Brings me right back to my childhood days of REALLY SUCKING at Super Mario Bros. Further adding to the challenge is the way the money you’re supposed to collect disappears after being onscreen for a certain amount of time. This encourages you to move fast and get to it before it despawns, making it that much harder to time your jumps right. And the enemies feel like a real threat to you whether you’re fighting them or just avoiding them. Overall it delivers that same fun-but-frustrating experience the platformers of my childhood did.

Despite this already solid gameplay,that’s not even the real draw of Scribbed. What makes the game really stand out are the graphics. This game was 100% hand-drawn with just pencil and paper. I don’t know about y’all, but when I was little I used to doodle elaborate video game levels in the margins of my notes during class. And I’d draw little stick dudes trying (and usually failing) to get through said level. This game feels like someone took those old doodles and brought them to life, making it nostalgic on a level a lot of games aren’t. It’s an excellent and memorable design choice, especially for a genre that just usually goes straight for those good good retro pixel graphics.

The only real thing I dislike about this game is the music. It’s on a very short loop (and by very short I mean like less than ten seconds) and it sounds like something that would be playing in the background at the world’s shittiest budget funhouse. The result is a grating mess that becomes all but unbearable after the first minute or so. This is one game you’ll want to turn the sound off for.
