Imam Ali (a) is the son-in-law of Prophet Muhammed (pbuh&hf) and part of the Prophetic household. Ali (a) is one of the most revered figures in Shi’a Islam as the successor of the Prophet after his death. Ali (a) is revered in Sunni Islam, but not to the same extent. We believe that Ali (a) was chosen as the rightful successor after the Prophet, however, his succession was usurped by Abu Bakr and Umar – the two caliphs of Sunni Islam. The term “Shi’a” means “follower” [of Ali]. His grave is in the city of Najaf in Iraq.

Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (a) is the daughter and the only surviving child of Prophet Muhammed (pbuh&hf) and the wife of Ali (a). She is highly revered in Shi’a Islam. We believe that Abu Bakr and Umar treated her harshly – hence our opposition to them – which led to her martyrdom not long after her father’s death as a result of her intense grief and injuries. Her grave was hidden by Ali (a) at her request from her oppressors. The whereabouts of that grave is not know til this day.
