no, butch is not a lesbian only identity. this is a common misconception. honestly, the idea that butches can only be lesbians is a very recent notion that ive heard these past few years. people online try to police my identity or challenge it nowadays. when nobody really cared up until like 2023.
i think its because when people think of a bisexual person they imagine the stereotypical heterosexual relationship with a very feminine woman and the male treats her very femininely. so the idea of a butch being bisexual kind of boggles people.
anyway the idea that only lesbians can be a butch is just plain wrong. ive talked to so many lesbian butches, of varying ages and backgrounds, and none of them care that im bisexual. i have thick body hair, my hair is short, i wear binders to restrict my chest, i wear masculine clothing, i have a deep voice, i am attracted to women, and i actually have a girlfriend. i have every quality of a butch and the fact that i have some attraction to men should not change that. im not even going to get into the history part of it but yes there were bisexual butch women throughout history.
i don’t know why people suddenly became so stingy with titles and labels. butch has NEVER been a lesbian exclusive identity.
