While the relation between art and media is too complex to reduce to a linear history, a key issue here is the way that media technology shifts from constituting an alternative pathway for the production of art – a new medium in a restricted sense – to becoming a general environment within which all cultural produc- tion, including art, takes place. Traditional artistic practices such as painting and sculpture still exist in the present, but the broader transformation of the means of producing and disseminating images has fundamentally altered their social role.
