Natalia does her best to reign in her anger at his words. Her energy is best spent in other places, and not focused on phantoms from the past. Van’s presence here should not hinder her. And yet. And yet. 

“If nothing is truly holding you here, then it would please me to see you leave. I do not wish to see you or speak with you after what you have done. There are others I wish I could see in this city...Lorelei knows I would choose a thousand before you.” 

35. Do they always rationalize errors? How do they accept disasters and failures?

Martel is an optimist, finding the good even in the worst of situations and holding onto it. When she does fail, she thinks of the things that went right- or could as a result. It’s hard for her to accept failure when it happens. Instead of trying to make sense of her mistakes, she thinks about the next step- what can she do it make the situation better? There is always another battle- life is a series of events, not one singular mistake. Sitting and trying to defend a mistake is meaningless when it’s happened- it’s time to move forward and do better. Though sometimes, some mistakes are more difficult to move past and bigger than others and in that case... she’d try and atone by doing what she can to rectify the situation and make the situation better for everyone affected.

10. Is your character street-smart, book-smart, intelligent, intellectual, slow-witted?

Martel isn’t the most intellectual or book-smart. She’s a little dumb, but has a heart of pure gold and is a hard worker. For the most part, she’s uneducated formally, only having her own life experiences to build upon. She’s got a gullible, giving nature that can make her seen a little unwise street-wise, but her true intelligence comes in her ability to connect and relate to others. Based off Gardener’s 9 intelligences, Martel has naturalist, musical, and interpersonal intelligences! Her smarts are just a little different than academic smarts.

19. What were your character’s deepest disillusions? In life? What are they now?

This girl’s had a rough life, she’s fought for everything she had and understood from a young age that you need to work hard to get anything in life. Nothing is easy, and things that come easy are most likely not going to last. While she retains a youthfulness about her character, she actually has lived through some difficult and dark struggles.Martel has struggled with some level of derealization and depersonalization even prior to dying, where at times she’d feel numb, detached, and almost like reality was a dream. Life didn’t feel real. Mostly it was triggered by war, anxiety, and trauma. Chronic Angelus Crystallus Inofficium also payed a toll on her physical and mental health, and the experiences would come and go to different degrees. She had a wonderful support network who would try and help ground her and take care of her when she’d need it... but death sorta fucked her all up. Was it all fake? What was real? Was she dead or just stuck? Then popping up back here... having had that feeling for so long (existing while... not existing) just... She doesn’t know if she’s alive- everyone says she’s alive, and she thinks she wants to be alive... but is that even possible anymore? It’s very hard on her.
