Monday, January 5: Skyclad, "The Sky Beneath My Feet"
R.I.P. Keith Baxter (1971-2008)
“The Sky Beneath My Feet” was the sort of track that made a lot more sense years after the fact even though it was very much of its moment. The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth was a logical next step for Martin Walkyier after his departure from Sabbat, and Skyclad’s first album was likewise a promising debut that offered a fresh perspective on where thrash could go. However, the upshot was that it came at the moment people were beginning to tire of thrash in general, and because British thrash, as good as a lot of it was, came in a few years after the Bay Area boom, people weren’t in the headspace for snarling paganism over grimy but highly technical pummeling. And while Skyclad would soon carve out a very distinct niche for themselves- and invent a subgenre in the process- “The Sky Beneath My Feet” still functioned first and foremost as thrash metal.
