Watching my favourite Scooby Doo film
Some folks might remember that last year I attempted to do #Scoobtober, where I attempted to draw a different Scooby-Doo monster for every day in October. Unfortunately half-way through the month I got hit with a bad stomach bug and couldn't continue. Though there was an attempt to keep going.
I was contemplating possibly picking up where I left off this year, but this October ended up getting real busy, so I just didn't have the time to do any October drawing challenge this year. Oh well, maybe I can attempt this theme another year.
“The Headless Haunting of Sleepy Hollow”
A Halloween Special Crossover between Sleepy Hollow and Scooby-Doo!
1. A Pumpkin Problem
The wind had a voice that night. It howled through the branches of Sleepy Hollow’s gnarled oaks, rattling the pumpkins on every porch. The sleepy little town—never as sleepy as its name promised—was once again haunted by a familiar legend.
And in the shadows of the covered bridge, something stirred. Hooves thundered. A sword flashed. A headless silhouette galloped into the fog.
Cut to the Mystery Machine, rattling down a cracked road with the usual enthusiasm of a vehicle powered by equal parts courage and Scooby Snacks.
“Like, did you guys really have to pick a town called Sleepy Hollow for our Halloween road trip?” Shaggy groaned, clutching a bag of marshmallows like a rosary. Scooby nodded solemnly. “Ruh-roh. Reepy Howwow bad juju.”
Fred turned from the driver’s seat with his trademark grin. “Relax, gang! According to my research, Sleepy Hollow’s Headless Horseman is just a myth. We’ll probably find it’s someone using a hologram, or some kind of trick.”
“Yeah,” Daphne said dryly, checking her phone, “because sword-swinging ghosts always have a lighting crew.”
Velma was glued to her tablet. “Actually, Sleepy Hollow has reported new attacks over the past two nights. Victims say the Horseman is looking for something — or someone.”
Shaggy slumped deeper into his seat. “And we’re driving toward that something. Typical.” Scooby whimpered, hiding his face in the snack bag.
2. Ichabod Crane Meets Mystery Inc.
Ichabod Crane never enjoyed modern Halloween. Too much synthetic cobweb, too little respect for the actual pagan rites. Yet, as a resurrected 18th-century soldier now serving as supernatural investigator, he supposed irony was just another modern invention he had to live with.
“Jenny,” he sighed, fastening his colonial waistcoat, “I do not see how chaperoning a local ‘Haunted Harvest Festival’ is the best use of our time when Sleepy Hollow is once again besieged by spectral decapitations.”
Jenny Mills loaded her shotgun with a smirk. “Because that’s where the latest sighting was, Crane. And because no one wants you scaring tourists with your five-paragraph lectures about the American Revolution.”
They arrived just as the Mystery Machine pulled up to the festival gates. Fred hopped out with clipboard confidence. “Hi! Mystery Inc.—we’re consultants on paranormal investigations!”
Jenny folded her arms. “Consultants, huh? You mean like the time your traps exploded at the Salem Witch Museum last year?” Fred winced. “That was… a calibration issue.” “Uh-huh,” Jenny deadpanned.
Ichabod stepped forward, peering at the gang with scholarly curiosity. “You claim to investigate the supernatural, yet none of you appear to carry proper wards, charms, or firearms. Do you rely solely upon… trap doors?”
“Ruh-huh!” Scooby barked proudly.
Ichabod blinked. “Good heavens, the dog speaks.”
Shaggy grinned nervously. “Like, we get that a lot, man. You’ll get used to it around the fourth ghost chase.”
Ichabod frowned. “That implies there shall be three prior ghost chases.” Shaggy: “You catch on quick.”
Jenny chuckled under her breath. “Oh, this is gonna be fun.”
3. The Horseman Returns
The festival was classic Sleepy Hollow: hayrides, pumpkin contests, and at least four Headless Horseman lookalikes taking selfies.
Fred was in full “trap prep” mode, sketching elaborate blueprints involving nets, tripwires, and motion sensors. Daphne was unimpressed. “Fred, we’ve been doing this for years. Every time you build one of these, it either catches us or it explodes.” Fred puffed his chest. “That’s what innovation looks like, Daph.” Jenny leaned over the plans, squinting. “Your pressure switch diagram is upside down. You’re basically building a catapult that’ll fling you into the next county.”
Fred flushed. “It’s… adaptable.”
Ichabod and Velma, meanwhile, analyzed soil samples and hoofprints. “These prints are too deep to be from mere costumed horses,” Velma said. “Indeed,” Ichabod nodded. “The composition of the ash… sulfurous. Deathly.”
From the distance came the faint sound of galloping hooves. Then a scream. Then fire.
The Headless Horseman burst through the pumpkin patch, wielding a flaming sword.
“Zoinks!” Shaggy shouted, grabbing Scooby and sprinting through the maze of stalls. “It’s déjà Headless!” Scooby yelped. “Like Goblin King! Ruh-roh, Shaggy!” Shaggy panted. “Yeah, remember that? Last time a pumpkin-headed guy tried to kidnap us for his weird party in the underworld? Hard pass, dude!”
Ichabod, unfazed, drew his saber with colonial precision. “Everyone fall back!”
Fred sprang into action. “Everyone into position! Trap plan Alpha-Gooseberry!” Jenny rolled her eyes. “That’s not even a real plan, Fred!” “I name my traps!” Fred snapped back, diving for a pulley line.
Unfortunately, the pulley snapped, sending him sprawling face-first into a hay bale.
Daphne, meanwhile, did not run.
When the Horseman swung his sword at her, she dodged, grabbed a decorative chain from a hayride float, and whipped it around the blade.
The chain clanked tight. Daphne planted her boots, pulled hard, and sent the Horseman’s sword spinning into the air. She caught it mid-arc, smirked, and said, “Guess you lost your head and your edge.”
Jenny whooped. “Remind me not to mess with you, Red.”
4. Pumpkin, Panic, and Plans
The gang regrouped in an old church Ichabod used as his base. Scooby was still shaking. “Ruh… ruh… ruhorseman!” “Relax, buddy,” Shaggy said, feeding him another snack. “Like, we’re still breathing — which, in my experience, is a good sign.”
Velma studied the sword Daphne had captured. “This isn’t a replica. The metallurgy is 18th century. If this is a costume, it’s one worth millions.”
Ichabod steepled his fingers. “The Horseman’s blade burns with the energy of the Hellfire curse. He hunts for the amulet once worn by his master — the one I buried.”
Jenny crossed her arms. “Which means someone dug it up.”
Fred perked up. “Maybe we can trap the thief!” Jenny: “Only if your trap doesn’t kill us first.”
Ichabod sighed. “I will require bait.” Shaggy instantly raised both hands. “Not it.” Scooby nodded fervently. “Ruh-uh!”
5. The Haunted Trap
By midnight, the gang and the Sleepy Hollow duo set their plan. Fred built a trap (supervised heavily by Jenny). Daphne armed herself with silver chains and flare rounds. Ichabod and Velma manned the ritual circle.
Shaggy and Scooby? They were bait, disguised as scarecrows with pumpkin heads.
Shaggy whispered, “Like, if I don’t make it out of this, tell my sandwich I loved it.” Scooby sniffled. “Reah. Ruh sandwich.”
The ground began to shake. The Horseman rode in, fire trailing behind.
“Raggy!” Scooby shrieked. “I know, I know! Run first, snack later!”
The Horseman chased them straight into the trap zone — which for once worked perfectly. Jenny pulled the switch, the net dropped, and Ichabod began chanting.
A shadow figure burst from the Horseman’s chest — a cloaked figure holding the stolen amulet. Velma gasped. “It’s—Harold Becket, the museum curator!” Fred blinked. “Wait, that guy who told us ghosts don’t exist?” Jenny smirked. “Guess he changed his mind.”
The spirit howled as Ichabod’s incantation tore the amulet apart. The Horseman’s form collapsed into dust and embers, his flaming pumpkin head rolling harmlessly into the grass beside Scooby.
Scooby stared at it, eyes wide. “Ruh…ruh… ruh-uh-oh.”
6. Farewell, Sleepy Hollow
Morning brought golden light over the misty town. The festival was calm again, though half the pumpkins were now charcoal.
Fred was polishing his net rig with pride. “See, told you the trap would work.” Jenny shot him a look. “After I rewired the whole thing.” Daphne chuckled. “Progress, Freddie. Baby steps.”
Ichabod approached Scooby and Shaggy, who were demolishing a breakfast buffet. “I must admit,” he said, “your cowardice is rivaled only by your loyalty. You remind me of certain soldiers I once knew.” Shaggy swallowed a mouthful of pancakes. “Like, thanks, man. We aim to please and not die.”
Scooby licked his muzzle. “Ruh-roh good fight.” Ichabod smiled faintly. “Indeed, Sir Scooby. You are braver than you believe.”
Velma handed Ichabod her card. “If Sleepy Hollow ever needs help again, Mystery Inc. is one GPS ping away.” Ichabod studied it. “What, pray tell, is a GPS ping?” Jenny patted his shoulder. “I’ll explain it on the drive.”
As the gang packed up, Daphne turned back one last time. “You guys ever need backup—call us. Just… not on Halloween, okay?”
Jenny grinned. “Deal.”
The Mystery Machine rolled away down the road, Scooby leaning out the window with a wave. “Ruh-bye, Reepy Howwow!” Shaggy laughed. “Let’s, like, never come back here again!”
From the distance, a faint neigh echoed across the valley.
Ichabod looked up, eyes narrowing. “Jenny…” She sighed. “Yeah, I heard it too.”
Cue the Scooby-Doo ending jingle with a gothic violin flourish.
THE END.
