Great Day. #ualbany #sciencelibrary #72 (at University at Albany, SUNY)
Discover the math and science behind optical illusions and patterns in the natural world
“From a zebra's stripes to a spider's web, from sand dunes to snowflakes, nature is full of patterns underlaid by mathematical principles. In The Beauty of Numbers in Nature, Ian Stewart shows how life forms from the principles of mathematics. The book begins with a simple and often-asked question about the shape and individual uniqueness of snowflakes. How can such a strange mixture of regularity and irregularity exist in a tiny bit of frozen water? By the end of the book, readers will have learned that mathematical patterns can come in many guises, some of which don't resemble patterns at all.”
“In Champions of Illusion, Susana Martinez-Conde and Stephen Macknik present a smorgasbord of mystifying images, many selected from their Best Illusion of the Year Contest. Whether it’s false motion, tricks of perspective, or shifting colors, Champions of Illusion is packed with adventures in visual perception. If you have ever found yourself face-to-face with an utterly bewildering illusion, you know the powerful effect such images have on the mind. The question we often ask ourselves is, How is that possible? Martinez-Conde and Macknik, explain just why we think we see the things we see.”
Planet Earth II is simply amazing - and the full set of episodes on DVD will be coming to the science library soon.
Meanwhile, check out the hundreds of books we offer on plants, mammals, biomes, insects and so much more, now on display in the science library where the Planet Earth II episodes are streaming from Netflix on a computer near our entrance.
"Cacti are full of contradictions. Although they can be found in some of the harshest, driest and most barren environments on earth, some are delicate tropical plants that grow high among the branches of the rainforest canopy. In Cactus Dan Torre explores the natural, cultural and social history of cacti, with particular emphasis on how these remarkable plants have been represented in art, literature, cinema, animation and popular culture around the world."
“From Flipper to SeaWorld, dolphins have long captured our hearts. We love these friendly, intelligent mammals, and they seem to return our feelings. Despite our familiarity with dolphins, though, we remain ill-informed about how they evolved, how they function, and how they have interacted with humans for millennia. In Dolphin, Alan Rauch dives into the dolphin’s zoology, as well as its social and cultural history, to offer a comprehensive view of these delightful creatures.”
“To enter caves is to venture beyond the realm of the everyday. From huge vaulted caverns to impassable, water-filled passages - Cave: Nature and Culture investigates the natural and cultural history of caves and considers the roles caves have played in the human imagination. It explores the long history of the human fascination with caves, and tells the tales of the adventurers who pioneered the science of caves and those of the explorers and cave-divers still searching for new, unmapped routes deep into the earth.”
