Some of Skorzeny’s men were also decorated for the Gran Sasso raid in the Berliner Sportpalast. From right to left, Obersturmführer Ulrich Menzel, Untersturmführer Otto Schwerdt, Unterscharführer Hans Holzer, Untersturmführer Robert Warger, Hauptscharführer Manns and Unterscharführer Bernard Cieslewitz. The two officer received the DkiG, while the enlisted men received iron crosses. Menzel’s award is particularly odd given that he spent virtually the entire raid on his back with a broken ankle.
