I think it's insane that schools need to have a "School Shooting Drill" now, because today my school district had it's annual "School Shooting Drill" and it made me realize a few things that I hadn't noticed before. The drill was during our second period class, so about 9:00 in the morning, and we were told about it by our teacher before it happened, but I'm unsure if other classes were told. Anyways, we go through the drill and it's whatever.
Here's the thing. I shouldn't have to take 10-20 minutes out of my class to practice a school shooter being in the building. That shouldn't even be a possibility. I shouldn't have to be worrying about my safety while at school. I shouldn't have to worry about a student going rouge and killing everyone. I should be worrying about my school work instead.
Plus the drills are so stupid. In the event that a student does decide to attack the school, they're going to know the procedures for each classroom they're in. They're going to know what classrooms have a way out or not. They're going to know what the hiding spots are. They're going to know which rooms are the easiest to get in to. Even if it's not a student, the person has most likely gone through these drills before, and they'll know what to expect.
Look, I know these drills are "important" or whatever, but what the district has us practice wont even help in the real event. My classroom has no hiding spots, and we're on the second floor. My classroom also has a huge disadvantage. The wall that faces the hallway isn't a wall. It's a giant window with broken blinds. Meaning anyone in the "pod" (as my school calls them) can see us. We're basically sitting ducks. We're out in the open, on display. I might as well draw a target on the glass and write "shoot here!!"
Anyways, we as students shouldn't have to practice this. We shouldn't have to practice how to cheat death. We shouldn't have to know what it's like to be hunted. We shouldn't have to worry about our safety while were learning. The possibility of a school shooting shouldn't even be a possibility. I come to school to learn, not worry for my life.
Sorry for the rant but it's been on my mind all day and I just need a place to write it down.
