74th Independence Day for India, celebrating the struggle for freedom, something our generation truly takes for granted, we have never known the struggles or perils of the fight for this day other than the stories from our History classes. My memory of this day starts with the 9 a.m school flag hoisting dressed in full uniform, I was in Scouts and Guides up until high school and also a member of the school band. So days leading up to Independence day were filled with extra hours of band practice and March past for the celebratory day. This was routine every year, but still very exciting for a school girl. And having that day off to go hangout with your friends after the flag hoisting and the speech by the eminent person, as cheif guest. Then came college where there was no band or scouts or cadets. It was a professional institute. I so fondly remember the Rava Kesari as a staple Independence Day dish, I remember the hot Chole and Batura, and going to Ramjis North Indian Dhaba in TRV to have Aloo Paratha for lunch(only place we could find the authentic ones back then) We would have our delegatory flag hoisting, a high ranking official would be part of it and we would listen to his motivational speech much like the one our PM said in his 7th straight Aug 15th speech. We would listen to him talk about the future of the country in the hands of youngsters like us, waiting for the speech to finish with hunger pangs and smell of chole and batura wafting from the college kitchen coz on such special days our college canteen(being a hotel mngt graduation college) would whip up some amazing breakfasts every Independence Day. I remember no one missed the flag hoisting or the speech so they could just simple gorge on that yummy breakfast prepared by the 2nd year students and most of us would have already had the rest of the day planned to enjoy the off hanging out with friends. So like all National Holidays, Independence day was another day that we could spend time with family and friends, now this was pre-employment and pre-pandemic.
