Balancing Academics and Sorority Life by Jordyn
When I went through recruitment, in Fall 2011, I remember asking every single chapter, “what is the time commitment like?” Each chapter responded with something along the lines of, “the time commitment depends on how much you decide to put into it.” Back when I was a freshman, this didn’t really help me. I admit it, I am a nerd and grades will always come first. I was so nervous that I would not have time keep up with my grades! But believe it or not here I am 3 years later, an incoming senior with a GPA I am extremely proud of.
I held two leadership positions in my sorority, participated in multiple philanthropy events, played in almost every intermural game, and still had the time to focus on school. This is my 5-step guide on how to balance academics and sorority commitments:
First and foremost- School will always come first. This is so important, and something you cannot lose sight of. This is why you are at USF in the first place! Although you would love to go to that sisterhood event or out to froyo with some sisters, do not forget about that huge test! School has to come first.
Dive in to the scholarship programs your chapter has to offer! Every organization has academic programs in place. Be aware of them!
Go to the library with sisters! Some of my most memorable nights are racking up those library hours, sitting around a huge table on the second floor, studying for an unbearable midterm with seven sisters by my side.
Be proactive! I will be the first to admit it; I am a HUGE procrastinator. If you know you have a philanthropy event on Saturday, get your homework done before that.
Reach out for help. Be aware of the sisters who have your same major or have taken the same classes as you. These people will be your lifelines! (Let alone you might be able to save some cash and borrow their old textbooks!)
So to wrap it up, if you are debating with yourself about joining a sorority because of your grades, or even if you are currently in a sorority right now, you can do it, I promise. Use the tools provided to you and success will come your way.
