Summary: Schmidt and Volkov’s mutual antagonism at work unexpectedly turns into sex, and then more sex, until they’ve been caught in each other for over a year. Schmidt tries to make himself okay with it being nothing more than hidden hookups, unwilling to upset the balance, but the arrival of a new hire seemingly throws it all off and he doesn’t know why.

Schmidt is in danger he didn’t even know was possible, and it’s only getting worse. He’d known Volkov was an expert in this particular subfield, but he hadn’t known he’s the expert. Schmidt’s always had a competence kink a mile wide, unable to resist that blend of confidence and skills that comes together so rarely. He’s not modest, he likens it to himself, but he hadn’t realized Volkov is his counterpart in all of those things - irritatingly competent, even more irritatingly aware of it, and just as full of sharp edges and impatience as Schmidt.
He’s pretty sure he’s cursed, even if the science is going beautifully between the two of them.
That’s about the only thing that’s going well.
