this is far beyond what isaac had ever imagined for his life. kids like him, poor kids from manchester who grew up in a cramped flat with their four siblings and three cousins, don’t get second chances like this. they don’t get to sit in classes at a school thousands of miles away, where nobody knows him or where he came from except that he’s the exchange student. the only problem seems to be that, unlike back home in england where isaac had a reputation that preceeded him, nobody here seems to know or give a shit about him beyond asking him to speak english so they can marvel at his accent.
after school, he sits alone in the cozy corner of a busy cafe, taking up two seats with his things so he can decompress and study after a long day, not quite ready to return to the quiet, empty house of his homestay. isaac’s host parents are amazing people, but they’re quiet and have no children, and nobody in their building seems to be isaac’s age. so he takes up space in a loud, bustling place so that he can at least feel a little bit like home.
