Scanlans Magazine (September 1970, Vol. 1 #7) Hippies, Castro, & Captain Garbage! Scanlan's Monthly was a politically controversial left wing magazine. It was in print only from March 1970 until January 1971. Edited by Warren Hinckle III and Sidney Zion, it featured politically controversial muckraking and was ultimately subject to an investigation by the FBI during the Nixon administration. It was boycotted by printers as "un-American" by 1971. Scanlan's is best-remembered for featuring several articles by Hunter S. Thompson, his first instances of "gonzo journalism." This issue features a piece titled "The Police Chief - An Indispensable Magazine of Law Enforcement" by Hunter writing as Raoul Duke. From the byline: "Raoul Duke is a well known weapons advisor and consultant to Hunter S. Thompson, candidate for sheriff of Aspen, Colorado." This issue is in beautiful shape, with only a slight pen mark on the right of the cover...otherwise, it is near mint. $50 email [email protected] #scanlans #huntersthompson #gonzo #raoulduke #fearandloathing #thegreatsharkhunt

Hunter S. Thompson fans, here's a rare find...Scanlan's Monthly Volume One Number Seven September 1970 Featuring Hunter S. Thompson (writing as Raoul Duke) & art by Ralph Steadman Scanlan's Monthly was a politically controversial left wing magazine. It was in print only from March 1970 until January 1971. Warren J. Hinckle III and co-conspirator Sidney Zion began publishing SCANLAN'S MONTHLY, intended to be the heavy-duty, no-holds-barred, rock 'em, sock 'em muckraking magazine that RAMPARTS had once been. The results were successful, as Richard Nixon forced an investigation of the magazine, forcing it to publish its final issue from Canada before SCANLAN'S disappeared forever. Featured in this issue: NIXON AND THE BUMS. AN EDITORIAL WHAT HAPPENED TO CASTRO? by K. S. Karol CHECK ONE: SYRACUSE U. DOES/DOES NOT GIVE A B. A. IN GUINEA PIGS by Elihu Blotnick HUNTING HIPPIES IN NEW MEXICO by Jon Stewart THE FISHERMAN'S COMPLAINT by Jerry Kamstra COCK FIGHTS IN AMERICA by Bill Surface THE SAME LAW FIRM THAT RUNS JOHN TUNNEY OWNS GEORGE MURPHY AND MOST OF THE REST OF CALIFORNIA by Warren Hinckle NO FLIES ON SHELL by Robert Sherrill THE MANY USES OF CS-GAS IN DERRY by Russell Stetler THE POLICE CHIEF -- THE INDISPENSABLE MAGAZINE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT by Raoul Duke (aka HUNTER S. THOMPSON!!!) This magazine is in excellent condition, with only a small pen mark on the cover, otherwise it is clean & crisp! Serious cats email [email protected] #huntersthompson #gonzo #scanlans
