Being back at his old school and seeing all of his old classmates would usually make Scout roll his eyes in disgust, especially now that all they could do was gush over their offspring and their fancy houses and their sparkly rings. However, all of the mushy-gushy stuff wasn’t bothering him as much as he expected it to. If anything, the domesticity he was experiencing intrigued him. He and Angel were practically married already, with two kids, two apartments, and two new steady jobs. Still, he felt weird being the only one who didn’t have the guts to make it official.
If Scout was anything, he was competitive. He always had to be the first to do something, and if he wasn’t, he’d be quick to catch up. This was no different. As soon as he was able to leave the house for a bit, he rushed down to a jewelers he knew his parents weren’t involved with and immediately began searching for the perfect ring. He knew Angel wouldn’t want anything fancy, but he also wanted to show everyone up. Falling somewhere in the middle was difficult, but eventually he bought the one he first laid eyes on as he walked in the store, staring intensely as the clerk placed it in a little blue suede box.
His heart thumped against his ribcage in time with his footsteps as he hurried to his car and headed back for the apartment. He slipped the box into his pocket as he quietly opened the door. “Ang?” he called, hoping she wasn’t asleep. He walked back to the bedroom, his heart rate speeding up at the sight of her rocking their daughter to sleep. A soft sigh escaped his lungs as he stepped through the doorway. He waited for her to lay the baby down before saying anything. He dragged her to their kitchen by the arms, his eyes locked on hers. “Hey,” he finally said, “I have something to ask you.”
