Ah yes, the tale of the car hams. Well, @mustachiohamstery and I were driving up a gaggle of hamsters and bunnies from the USA up to @allcreaturesto in Toronto. We had several stops along the way and had stopped for gas, food, etc. We stopped over in Michigan at @lucythehamstar (this was the first time we met!) and as I was rearranging the bins in the backseat to get on our merry way to Canada, a hamster scurried between them. Wait... Why was a hamster NOT in their bin?! Panic ensued and we all jumped in. Bless @lucythehamstar's heart for being so accommodating and helping us out. It was a hot day in June, and we had an entire van to look through. I also knew we had made many stops. I was horrified knowing that one of the missing babies could have jumped out 😭. We found the offending bin which had contained FIVE hamsters and now had only two. Three babies were on the run. I managed to catch one under the latches for the clip in seats, and one near the consoles. We searched for almost an hour for the third. I knew we needed to get home as we still had to get over the border and then had multiple stops. I also knew the baby could have jumped out along the way, and we might be searching forever. With a heavy heart I called off the search. With me in the car, the other two opened the sliding van door. I heard "Julianna don't move" and I froze. The last missing baby was in the door track, and @mustachiohamstery and @lucythehamstar were able to secure them safely. All hamsters were found! I have never been so beside myself. The babies had chewed a hole that was drilled in the bin and escaped that way. Lesson learned. We made it safely across the border (with a bit of hassle) and dropped everyone off. I don't think we got home until after 2am. But we did it! Please do be careful with rodents in your car. Have a good quality carrier and please leave them inside it! Accidents happen of course, but we can take steps to reduce risk. Oh, and here's a little #SBHSings from once they were back to safety. Also... I am home after dropping off Overlord #Bliss with Dr. Munn and his team at @jamesonqueenanimal. She's promised to be on her very best behaviour but I don't quite believe her. Also, some #SBHSings. Two things to note: 1.I missed a golden opportunity for the line "bite me like you'll never let me go" and I will forever live in shame. 2. The video cuts off her very big cheekers, so you get an additional photo to show them. If you've never had a hamster (or pet) undergo surgery, it is definitely a new experience! You drop them off early in the morning, and the surgeries are done throughout the day. I'm not sure when exactly Bliss has hers scheduled (I'm guessing this afternoon) but right now it's a waiting game. After she's out of surgery (or during, should there be complications I need to make decisions on) I will get a call to update me. Since we all know Bliss is tough as nails, she's going to do just fine and I'll get a call telling me that and when I can pick her up this evening. Our vet prefers internal, glued stitches to avoid them picking at the surgical area. Hamsters don't do well with E-collars, so while we have one it's best used only for short instances (like when you want a topical medication to absorb). Likely Bliss will be vet wrapped to reduce mobility and protect the surgical site. I've never had a hamster need vet wrap before, but something tells me Bliss will... Our vet dumps their bedding in their bin and replaces it with clean bedding/paper towel to keep the incision as clean as possible. They'll monitor her after to ensure everything is hunky dory and then she's good to come home - probably with some meloxicam to reduce inflammation and pain. It'll be an anxious few hours though while I wait so I'll be keeping busy getting emails out and what not. I'll let everyone know how things are once I have more info. #Humphrey is a very silly little hamster. He and #Brie seem really close (at least as close as baby Syrian hamsters can seem 🤷‍♀️) so I'm dreading splitting them. But, needs must! Also, a little #SBHSings. For the record, Humphrey will be extremely spoiled and will not, in fact, be finding street snacks.
