Semester at Sea
I have been home for over 3 years... and that ship is still my home, I still miss falling asleep to the movement of the ship, and I am still amazed with how much pasta and potatoes I ate on just one voyage. 3 Years later and none of these thoughts have faded.
SAS: Supermarket Brief
A designer led project initiated by SAS London. We were set the task of solving a problem within a supermarket setting. I found a problem everyday consumers are faced with, a sea of brands.
Every time someone goes to a supermarket they are faced with a large number of different brands and varieties of product. This can make the shopping experience overwhelming and stressful, how do you choose?
My idea was to solve the problem by offering people an alternative range of products to buy. A simply packaged, one ingredient, local produce range. A range people can trust and know it will taste good and be from a good place. A no-nonsense range of products. A range of products for those in the know. A range people would simply go in and purchase because they trusted it and knew it was ‘good’ produce.
The packaging is very simple and bold, by being white it represents the purity of the produce and allows it to stand out from all the colours/brands on offer. Providing tranquility and peace amongst the sea of brands customers are faced with. All the products in the range come from closest British supplier possible. Helvetica is used because it is simple and a widely recognised typeface. The most minimal amount of information is shown on the packaging, this works well because each product only has one ingredient. The pure produce also only comes in one type e.g. one type of milk, the most popular, semi-skimmed.
The information on the pack shows the product name, weight, use by date, barcode (which can be scanned to reveal more information) and a small narrative to simply explain what the range is.
An addition to the no-nonsense packaging is an app. Food Finder is a simple application that allows the customer to find out more about the product they are buying/have bought. Although the range is supposed to be trusted, there will be customers who may want to find out more. By scanning the barcode on the packaging, the app brings up information on the producer and where the food is from. By providing a small biography, consumers can feel a slight personal connection to the producers.
Academic + Lisbon excitement!
20 June 2014 Lisbon, Portugal (not yet embarked) Officially I am the biggest nerd to ever nerd. I am really excited because I got accepted to be on the TEDEx marketing team!! TEDEx is really big on the international stage so the fact that I got accepted to the committee (which I applied for) is amazing! And the fact that they have this event at all on the ship is beyond belief. Google TEDEx. It's insane. Besides, the founder of the 'x' branch (the independent organization portion of TED) is coming onto the ship in July. How cool is that? Honestly, it's so amazing. On top of that, I had dinner with my law professor yesterday and we're collaborating on a potential article to submit for a law review! I won't say what it's about because I don't want to spoil it but I'm already researching. Too bad the databases are down but it's cool because I researched in the library all day yesterday. I'm hanging out with my friends now but I'm still working on the article in my spare time. Lisbon tomorrow! We're hanging out all day and going out tomorrow night. Happily I'm going to Algarve the day after with Andrew! I'm glad we discovered we're on the same field program otherwise I would have been way more nervous about the overnight. It's amazing how many people are from Texas! This guy whose name I can't remember (a recurring theme for most of us on the ship) is a senior at UT and we're going on the Segway tour together! Pleasant surprise! It's fun to find people who are going together on field trips with you. How awesome, am I right?
18 June 2014 In between southampton and Lisbon Today was the first day of classes. I successfully managed to drop Musical Theater History and added International Law, which I sat in on today. IL was amazing--actually, all my classes were amazing. My professors seemed super knowledgable about their info, and they encouraged meeting them outside of classes. I could have taken four classes, but because none of this transfers back to SCU and it's very reading heavy, I decided not to. Every class really relates very well back to each other and my European economic history course actually relates back to my heroes and heroism class from SCU (but only vaguely because we're talking about the Byzantine empire, which derived from the western Roman Empire). Settling into a new routine will be interesting. Hopefully we can all still manage to see each other despite our class times being all wacky and meal times happening when some have classes. We get into Lisbon tomorrow but they won't let us off until the next day. It's unfortunate but we can't do anything about it. Guess I'll just stare at Portugal while I'm in class. Pfft. As if I'll be able to pay attention. semesteratsea

SAS Supermarket Brief The images here are from my presentation boards I produced for hand in. They show the process (shortened) of how I came up with my ideas and where my inspiration came from. At the end you can see the final idea I came up with. The final concept I came up with was:
To produce and alternative, no-nonsense range of products. A range of products for those in the know. A range people would simply go in and purchase because they trusted it and knew it was 'good' produce. The packaging is very simple and bold, by being white it represents the purity of the produce and allows it to stand out from all the colours/brands on offer. Providing tranquility and peace amongst the sea of brands customers are faced with.
All the products are sourced from the closest producer possible, therefore making the range purely British.
Today's the day!
Southampton, UK 16 June 2014
It’s midnight in CA and 2 am in TX, but it’s 8 am here and I’m up to repack what little I took out of my bags and grab breakfast. We leave the hotel at 9:45 and then get the boarding process started at 10:00!
The boat leaves port at 8pm, but once we get on we can’t get off. Suppose I’ll settle in, get oriented on the ship, and make some friends. Not going to lie, I’m a big nervous, but nothing that’s rewarding is typically easy, so I've gotta put my big girl panties on and do this.
Also appropriate. I'm so pumped!
