Native Habitat: Japan and Eastern Russia
Size: 40’ to 50’ in height, spread approximately equal to height
Growing Habitat: Prefers well-drained, acid loams and clays; full sun
Hardiness Zone: 4 to 7
Color: Shiny dark green in summer; bronze to red in the fall
Landscape: Great for use of shade tree or street tree. Excellent foliage.

Prunus sargentii (Sargent Cherry) Rose family- Rosaceae Native habitat: Japan. Introduced in 1890. Size: Grows 40 to 50' in height with a spread approximately equal to height. Under cultivation 20 to 30' high and wide would be more logical. Leaves: Alternate, simple, 3 to 5" long, about one-half as wide, sharply serrate with acuminate teeth, purplish or bronzy when unfolding, dark green above, glabrous and glaucescent beneath. Buds: Imbricate, reddish brown, sharply pointed, clustered at apex, often two buds at the nodes, one perhaps floral, the other vegetative. Bark: Genuinely attractive, rich polished reddish to chestnut brown and marked with extended horizontal lenticels. Preferred growing conditions: Does not appear to relish the Zone 7 and 8 heat. Hardiness: Zone 4 to 7. Study by Jacobs and Johnson, HortScience 31:988-991 (1996), showed P. sargentii seedlings the most susceptible to flooding.
