Journal Entry: Illustrator Spotlight
For this entry in my design journal I wanted to highlight a few illustrators that I have followed/loved for a long time. This includes the wonderfully whimsical @/meyoco, the gilded inspiration @/superstarfigher, the elegantly lovely @sibyllinesketchblog, the immortal detail-master Alphonse Muncha, the uncensored realist @/futarinokizuna_ and the captivating color-blocker @theobanoth, and while ALL are beautiful and incredibly inspiring, I wanted to give a spot light especially to the artist @sarakipin‘s illustration ability (her’s are the three ones in the third row).
Not only does she do incredibly dynamic drawings of people and animals, she also does beautiful landscapes and literally breathtaking visual story-telling. The grasp she has on color theory is unmatched and is truly at a level I strive to reach. She also tends to focus on a certain time period/clothing choice for the pieces I am most drawn to, the armored knights. She has countless examples of intricate armors in both tragic and heroic depictions, not only that but also shows the knights slaying an odd beast or two. Her work is truly inspiring on so many levels.
The specific piece of her’s I would love to talk about is the one on the left in her row. I have had this piece in my camera roll for maybe four months, I love looking at it so much. Its beautifully dynamic but not exaggerated, has an overall almost hypnotic/mysterious draw to it and is so so so expertly colored and layered that it just makes me smile. The details in the face and shoulder puffs are contrasted by the simplicity and color choice of the swords, drawing your eye all around the piece while also not feeling over done nor under done. It’s just so lovely to me and encourage everyone to look at her work (I don’t think she’s much older than us!).
All of the illustrations (except https://www.ncsml.org/exhibit/alphonse-mucha-inspirations-of-art-nouveau/) are found on the artists’ art pages, which are either found on Tumblr, Instagram or both.
