Chennai 😍 “This church was built on top of the tomb of Saint Thomas,” says Alex Matthew, a pilgrim from nearby Kerala, who came to Chennai to spend Christmas in perhaps the holiest neighborhood for Christians in India, Santhome, where one of the twelve apostles of Jesus is believed to have been buried. “We only know of three such sites in the world,” notes Matthew, a 34-year-old devout Catholic, who said he had wanted to come here since he was a child, “The other two are Saint Peter’s in the Vatican and Saint James the Great’s in Spain.” The neighborhood,a busy part of central Chennai and near the world-famous Marina Beach, celebrates Christmas discreetly with few fire crackers going on, some stars on street trees, and a lot of poor lining up outside of the churches.
